NJIT vs Rutgers

This probably isn't the best place to post this thread but I was wondering what school is better putting everything into account :

-Academics
-Clubs
-Social Life
-Party Life

I got into Rutgers Engineering and The School of Engineering (Undecided major) in NJIT
Price wise they are both exactly the same but Rutgers is 45 min away when NJIT is 20 min away ( not a big deal but putting it out there)

Personal experiences are prefered =D

I stayed at NJIT for a 3-week program. Heard police sirens and people loitering outside the dorm building all night  Lol with that being said, I’m sure there’s a pretty high crime rate since it’s Newark. My classes were on Martin Luther King Blvd, sketchy people were walking around at night, and my RA said it’s a really dangerous road (shootings, muggings, etc.).

But it wasn’t bad at all during the daytime.

So long story short, I crossed out NJIT after that. It wasn’t bad during those 3 weeks, but I couldn’t imagine myself living there for 4 years.

I don’t know anything about NJIT except it’s in Newark.

The engineering school is great here at Rutgers. I’ll be bias right now . . . seriously, I think you’ll have a better time at Rutgers in terms of the social aspect. You have the best of both worlds : the academics + the social life.

Unless distance is a problem for you (are you commuting?), then I would choose Rutgers.

Yea I am going to commute but I heard the academics is better at NJIT since it specializes in just engineering lol

@drexeler
I’ve heard some stories about new brunswick being dangerous too…but yea it’s Newark
-_-

Well if you are going to commute, perhaps it is best to go to NJIT. I live 55 minutes away from Rutgers and I would hate to commute despite having the train as a convenience.

New Brunswick does have it’s dangerous parts (if you walking in New Brunswick off campus at night). You just get the occasional mugging. But other than that, it feels safer than Newark.

I visited NJIT. Honestly, it didn’t seem like a social school at all and the campus seemed a bit small with not much to do. My tour guides said no one leaves campus to go into newark because it’s not safe. For fun, people instead go up to NYC, which is very close.

That’s just the impression I got up there, and since I wouldn’t be able to go home very much, I couldn’t imagine staying up there most of the time. I crossed it off my schools to apply to.

Yeah if you’re commuting NJIT would probably be the most economical solution. Plus you won’t have too worry much about the fact that it’s Newark.

It’s all about reputation when coming out. To be honest, many of the students of NJIT don’t take their courses seriously b/c some of the professors are simply horrible and they spend every lecture browsing porn instead of taking notes. Rutgers on the other hand has famous professors that had won multiple prizes and has ties with some of the largest “Engineering” Corporations in the world such as Westinghouse and General Electric. Even though the commute is longer and more costly at Rutgers, I would definitely recommend Rutgers as that money would pay off in your future!

Because NJIT is more focused on engineering, you might get mad bored there. Engineers are a strange bunch of people. (I can say that; I live with them.) You’ll be friends with them, sure, but you’re going to miss your other friends, too. Rutgers is a great mix of all different backgrounds and the large campus may be a bit harder to adjust to as a commuter, but I know there is just so much you can do. I’ve met a lot of commuters getting involved in clubs and stuff.

I visited NJIT shortly for a “career day” type thing in engineering when I was a high school junior. That’s really all I know of it. All I know is that I love it at Rutgers.

I have 4 days to decide between these two and I still haven’t made that decision…oh btw I moved so rutgers is gonna 25-35 min and NJIT is 20-25 min so its like a 10 min difference at most so that wont mattter but rutgers tutition will be $2000 more (which isn’t much of a problem so what do you guys think?) …your final thoughts?

Rutgers. I was not impressed when I visited NJIT.

Well when it comes to academics, NJIT Vs Rutgers Engineering, Rutgers is way better and ranked higher. If you somehow decide to change your major you can do a lot more things at rutgers then NJIT (With NJIT you are basically stuck with engineering) As far as academics, social life, and clubs Rutgers is far far more superior since it is a bigger school and has people of more diverse backgrounds and majors. I would recommend Rutgers because academically it is way better. search up the ranks for engineering for NJIT and rutgers you will see that Rutgers has a way better program. Good Luck! (:

I’m currently enrolled at NJIT and I absolutely hate it here. There is no social life what so ever. The area is crap, the campus is small and almost cramped. They invest literally nothing into anything that will make being there seem a little less like hell. I’m transferring to Rutgers as soon as I can. I give NJIT a C.

The Engineering School at Rutgers is located on Busch Campus in Piscatway which is super safe. I have never had an issue there ever. Honestly, Rutgers SOE is more highly ranked than NJIT as well. So if you are making your decision based on prestige or quality of the program, Rutgers is the best choice. NJIT has a good program as well, but Rutgers puts so much more money into research and academics than NJIT to the point that all of its programs are better.
