Njit...

I was attracted to NJIT by an extremely generous scholarship they offer. But now, I've been hearing that it's in a very unsafe location (Newark? I don't live in the States so I have no idea what might be so bad about it), the school sucks and whatnot, which makes me think there might be something fishy about their willingness to offer such a scholarship. Any input on this?

Newark is a pretty shady part of NJ. If you are looking for a good tech school in NJ Steven’s is a much better option.

bump
The scholarship is -very- generous: full tuition, room, board, fees. Do the benefits outweigh the negatives?

IMHO - that area of Newark is OK, I’ve taken night classes at NJIT and never had a problem. That being said you do have to be aware of your surroundings & use common sense. NJIT, Rutgers and Essex Community College are all near each other so there is a lot of activity in the area. I think the benefits outweigh the negatives. Plus you are very close the NYC - just hop on the train and you are there in about 20 min. Good Luck!

^ thank you!

Any other opinions?

I’ve been to NJIT for a number of programs. It’s certainly urban, and it’s not a beautiful campus, but it’s hardly a war zone – it’s a very practical school. Stevens is probably better, but it’s way way way more expensive. Lots of people do great work at NJIT.
