My son is a NMF and UT is his first choice. I thought NMF money at UT was 4,000, 3000, etc. Did they increase it?

He also has been accepted at the Barret's Honor College at ASU, which gives more or less a free ride. I tlooks like a very good set-up and a friend loves the program. Applied to Tulane, but not really that interested. Almost walking distance to Rice, so he never considered it. A lot of similarities.

Do you think it is too late to apply to Florida? It sounds good.

We can afford UT pretty easily as thankfully we have the Texas Tommorow Fund and locked up the tuition a few years ago with a home equity loan. He is saying pre-med, too.

texdad, I bet for NMF it is not too late. Why not call the school and find out?
You can just tell them point blank, your son just became a NMF and you have heard UF has great academic and financial programs for NMF.

Txdad, I know for sure that it is not too late. My son has another friend at his school who is NMF and when he got back from Florida singing its praises, this boy wanted to apply. My son called the Assistant Dean that we had met with and she said that even though the deadline had passed, he could call her and send in an application. If you want her information, email me personally and I will give you her email address.

ag54, thanks for the info. I have always thought that there is something to be said for going where you are really wanted. That is why we liked the Barrett's Honors College and ASU so much. Son has readily agreed to visit ASU in the week of Mar 20 as it is his Spring Break. This is because a kid we used to know in Houston, who now lives in Madison Wisconsin likes Barrett so much. Now to talk to DS.

I have tried repeatedly to get Son to file an app for OU in Norman where my mom is from and he has a lot of coursins. No dice. You know how that can be. Must get his stubborness from Texmom. Probably this UF thing is all in dear dad's mind.

In son's school there are about 50 NMF. He knows a lot of them. If we could get all the kids to the free ride schools maybe we could break the pricing monopoly at some of the privates. Florida might be the school to do that. Too bad is isn't on Miami Beach. Imagine if UF had a thousand NMF and Harvard only 300 or whatever.

God NO, my husband played football for UT!! Blasphemy!! Ha Ha. I am an old SMU grad! If your son's school sent the 50 NMF's and my son's school sent their 17, Houston could make a pretty big impact there! You should try to get your son to take a quick trip to Gainesville to check it out. We flew into Jacksonville and drove to Gainesville. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get there. You can fly into Gainesville, via commuter airline, but it is alot more expensive. Funny thing, one of the people we talked to said how long of a drive it was, and my son said that it takes about an hour and a half to get across town in Houston in traffic.

Hi ag54 again,
I thought you were
1) a dad
2) an Aggie.
Looks like we will be visiting UF for spring break. S will also go to Tulane soon for an in-depth EE tour.
Where did you stay in Gainesville? Last summer, I stayed at the Holiday Inn near campus while S stayed in a dorm. If Holiday Inn is full, I will need suggestions.
Good luck to us all!

We stayed at the Paramount Plaza. It is right down the street. The gal at UF set it up for us, and UF paid for the first night! I've got to say I was shocked when I went down to pay and the desk clerk said, "the university paid for one night." I'm telling you, they really want to impress both the kids and the parents! And like Texdad said, "There is something to be said for going where you are really wanted." I hope your son likes it. Good luck!! It would be fun to get our kids together considering they obviously have the same taste in colleges!

Thanks ag54. Will check into the Paramount Plaza availability in case the Holiday Inn is full. Starting to make plans for the visit. Please post or send me any tips etc. you may think of from your recent Gainesville visit.....thanks!
