<p>I was under the impression that being a NMF had some clout with USC admissions, but I'm still stuck in the 'we've received fall grades' camp. I just wondered if I am the only one in this situation??</p>
<p>Btw, I have pretty good stats. 4.4 weighted GPA, 3.86 UW, 32 ACT, glowing reviews, tons of instrumental music ec's, blah blah blah. </p>

<p>Unfortunately, being NMF is not a guarantee. A good friend of my son's did not get in last year as an NMF.</p>

<p>I called USC on this and they said it's not a guarantee for acceptance but if USC accepts you, you get 1/2 tuition. And that's the guarantee part.</p>
<p>Thanks cc411! On another note, have they already notified all the NMF awardees? I really hope this isn't the case, and I don't think there's any way of knowing. </p>
<p>However, if someone knows the answer (and isn't an adcom) I'll bet they're on this board.</p>
<p>uh....... i'm pretty sure not all NMF awardees have been notified. so far, i've only heard like 2 or 3 on this board.. that's nothing compared to how many NMF actually applies to USC and gets accepted and choose to matriculate.</p>

<p>Did you apply to a super competitive program like the film school at USC which takes a limited number of students? My impression from this forum is applicants are first reviewed by the broad college of arts and sciences and then the application is sent to individual schools. How competitive is the program you wanted?</p>
<p>I applied undeclared to college of arts and sciences....hence my apprehension. </p>
<p>I already got rejected from Stanford (where I had my heart set on), UCLA (where I thought I would get in), and UCSD (winter quater acceptance--as good as rejected to me).</p>
<p>I am wondering if you attend a high school which has tons of kids applying to these California schools. My understanding with the top universities, in general, is some high schools have MANY students applying to the same schools which makes it more difficult. Since your post suggests the possibility that you live in California (having applied to California schools), did your high school have a few hundred apply to USC? One other important thought, are you 100% sure that your high school stamped your transcript NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST? Did your school for sure send such a transcript?
I would consider checking if USC received your official high school transcript with a stamp on it that says NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST. Finally, be happy that you got into UCSD. It doesn't matter if you start winter quarter because you could take some general ed. requirements at a junior college or work in the mean time. UCSD has some very nice things going for it, particularly if you are in state with in state tuition and being able to enjoy the nice weather in San Diego.</p>
<p>My school probably had about 30-40 USC applicants. And the school shouldn't have to report NMF. I thought that was all done through Natl Merit Corp. They send the various schools a list of the kids that have declared first choice to that particular institution.</p>
<p>Even if none of that were true, I sent an email to my admissions rep, and gave him an update on my senior year, which included the NMF (and he replied). So I think I'm clear on the notification front.</p>
<p>I'm just getting impatient, just like everyone else on here. It won't be long...</p>
<p>Did you put down on the National Merit form that USC is your FIRST CHOICE?
Look at the USC Scholarships--USC wants to know it is your FIRST CHOICE for NMF to qualify for the half scholarship. Did you send mid-year grades? My son's high school stamps the mid-year transcript with National Merit Finalist.
I suggest you go back to your high school ASAP and make sure they send the mid-year grades stamped with National Merit Finalist on it. Also, did the other 30-40 kids hear from USC yet? I would especially recommend following up with the transcript idea and having your guidance counselor call USC on your behalf. Hope this helps.</p>
<p>All those things have happened. I put USC as my first choice -- I even called to check that it was changed. I sent the grades (my status is currently, 'we've received fall grades'). My counselor emailed my adcom and he simply said....we'll have a decision out by April 1st. And yes, most of the kids that I thought would get in have already gotten acceptances (except for a few). Anyway, again--this is why I'm nervous.</p>
<p>Do you think USC put a cap on how many acceptances went to your school? Still, I would think you would get in being NMF. Did you apply to an extremely competitive school within USC (such as the film school?). Do you think the kids in your school who were accepted were legacy kids? I am sorry you are going through this long wait.</p>
