Did any NMF’s at Ole Miss choose NOT to be in the Honors College? If so, why?
Our S16, who is an almost sure NMSF and is seriously considering Ole Miss, does not want to apply to Honors College. With his GPA he wouldn’t be a shoo-in anyway, but I think he’s sick of being a “smart kid” and wants to be a “regular student”.
I didn’t want to add the hassle factor of a “humanities burden” of required courses for my science-oriented kid who hopes to place out of literature, history, and the like.
On the other hand, I did not want to miss out on something valuable by opting not to submit an application to the Honors College.
I know our son, who made D’s in English as a sophomore and junior, is happy that his 4 on the AP English exam will probably get him out of taking Freshman Comp. The other Humanities classes are less of a problem; in fact, he plans to minor in cinema studies.
If I recall correctly, he could possibly go the provost route. For the “smart kid” who doesn’t want the honors college. You would need to verify but I think that is an option.
Thanks @DiffMom - will check it out.
Sad to see that a few humanities courses are viewed as a “hassle.”
The Honors College is geared towards Liberal Arts majors - sad that they have taken this limited direction as students in other majors without a love of liberal arts don’t seem to apply (or drop out after 1 or 2 years). If your students “enjoy intellectual novelty and courses that focus on critical thinking through reading, writing, and discussion” then I would apply as applying doesn’t mean you have to commit.
Keep in mind that even if you commit you can always drop out the Honors College if you find it isn’t a good fit for you.
My son wants to go into the Pharmacy Early Entry program and has all the status for Honors College but looking at what the Honors College requires and offers isn’t appealing to him. He doesn’t want to do any more liberal arts classes than is required (he hates to read “literature” and isn’t into discussion on “literature” and has no desire do a thesis just to get a Honor Degree).
