My son is a junior and should make semifinalist in Indiana (222) but he got (I think) a 2190 on his first SAT (760 in math, 690 on the essay pulled him down.) He's got >4.0 GPA, something like #13 in his class, taking 4 AP classes this year (including Calculus and Physics) and 3 next year. We're debating whether to retake the SAT. My son wants to because he wants to bring the essay up, and I think he has dreams of an 800 in math. I'm wondering if this SAT is good enough for him to make finalist. Also wondering if anyone knows whether his stats are good enough for a presidential scholarship at Purdue.

I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

His SAT score is more than good enough to make finalist.

I'm sorry that I don't know anything about scholarships at Purdue though!

Thanks. By the way, I realized I had the name of the scholarship wrong. There's the Beering, which is a complete full ride, and Resident's, which covers tuition.

I believe NMSC looks at the SAT for confirmation of the PSAT score. A large negative gap could be a problem, but I wouldn't think 30 points would be significant at all. I also read that they look for an uw GPA above 3.5, so his grade/rank are definitely not an issue either. What is the NMSF cutoff in IN? It seems to me that he is well on his way! :-)

(Also don't know a thing about Purdue...wish I could help!)

Sorry - haven't checked the board lately. Cutoff in IN was 212 or 213 this year, I think. I feel better about his chances for finalist but he may still take another crack at the SATs for a chance at a Beering scholarship (free med school!!!)
But another question. US News says Purdue has 83 "merit scholars." I thought this meant finalists, my son insists it's finalists, semi-finalists and commended. Do you know what is correct?
