NMF rejection letters go out very soon...heads up!

Yes, we agree. That is all I was trying to say, they can look at the transcript for themselves.

sorry for off topic- but does anyone know where or if the presidential scholar candidates were posted today as expected? i tried searching CC and the Ed.gov website and google without luck!

perazziman - Ouch! I consider the University of Chicago an “elite” college, but I guess everyone has their own definition.

If a finalist, what costs do NM awards typically cover?

There is another thread that outlines the majority of the awards, but just as an example–University of Kentucky offers a full ride+ (housing, etc) to all NMF. Bama is currently offering full tuition, freshman housing, ipad, etc. This is just for NMF–not being actually winning the scholarship from NMSC. This is one reason why everyone is wanting to make the NMF stage. These awards can be quite significant and a major difference maker for many families.

The exception proves the rule. :)

Hey, PA-C:

I tried answering your PM about the U.S. Presidential Scholars program, but could not because I don’t have enough posts. I had to use the “visitor message” function, so check your inbox for my response to yesterday’s question. As for today’s question, last year, someone reported that it was posted on the program’s site in the afternoon.

2013 Presidential Scholar Candidates
http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/2013/candidates.pdf

For those interested, this list consists of the top 20 male and top 20 female scorers on the ACT or SAT (converted to ACT equivalent–includes ties and based on highest score in a single sitting, not superscores) in each state. In addition each state can nominate three more candidates “of exceptional scholarship” of each gender. Finally a few students can be nominated who demonstrate outstanding artistic talent. But most students make the list purely as a result of their very high standardized test scores. For most states this requires scores of 2350+ on the SAT and 35+ (actually 140+ as it is based on “sum of scores”, not the composite average rounded) on the ACT. In some of the bigger states it probably requires “perfect” scores to make this list.

Umm, ok hate to be really stupid but what exactly is this? My son is on the list but I have received no notification and don’t know if he was supposed to have done something or what. Thanks

On a previous question, did we ever determine when colleges/ universities receive the list of NMFinalists? The same time as the High Schools???

tjmom - No scholarships. Only recognition. IMO, it is a big enough deal to notify his prospective colleges that he has made this list. This pool of candidates is roughly five times more exclusive than the NMF pool. (Although I note that TJHS has 35 qualifiers on this list so I am sure it won’t seem as special there as it would in most places.)

The list just came out, so I am sure many notifications are pending. As far as I know there is nothing to do before notice is given.

Descartes- my son isn’t a student at Tj. I know my name throws folks, I keep thinking I should change it for that reason. Thanks for the advice.

Sorry–my mistaken inference. Congrats to your son. (Your location in Fairfax County reinforces the impression.)

There was a time when Harvard recognized athletes and sponsored them. It does not anymore. Does this mean athletic prowess is depreciating?

If anyone is interested, you can call the Dept of Education (319-341-2777) and they will give you the cutoffs for Presidential Scholar in your state. It varies from state to state and from year to year, and girl and boy cutoffs can be different. Today was the first day that one could call and get this info. I called and learned this for our state (Missouri): Boys’ cutoff: SAT (CR + M)- 1600; ACT sum (M + R + S + E)- 142 (this is the lowest possible 36)/ Girs’ cutoff: SAT (CR + M)- 1580; ACT sum (M + R + S + E)- 141 (this is the highest possible 35). My son did not make it (ACT 34; SAT CR + M- 1560) but is not at all disappointed because it is so very tough to make it. Congrats to tjmom and all of you whose kids did make it!! :)

If a finalist, what costs do NM awards typically cover?

It depends.

If you choose a college that gives a large NM scholarship, then you’ll get that.

If you choose a college that doesn’t give NM scholarships, then you may get nothing.

Thanks to this thread I found out my son made the cut off for Presidential Scholar. I do not think he is going to do the application. I will leave it up to him, but he hates writing essays and I do not think he has much chance of being selected. Is there any harm in not going forward with this?

Sent from my SPH-D700 using CC

Mom 24 boys - my brother did it “back in the day” and had a great time. Got invited back the next summer as a counselor and got some internships out of it. But if you’re not looking for political influence and don’t care about the week in DC, really nothing. If my son hadn’t been able to rework the essays from ones he’d already written I don’t think I would have ever gotten him to complete the app. He made finalist (I believe top 5 males & females in each state) but not the top 1 to go to DC and was kind of annoyed he had done all this extra work. Not like it’ll help on a college app by the time they find out in May or whatever.

To get back on topic… any new news on reject letters?

Thanks.

Attended a meeting at our school for PSAT prep for next years juniors and asked instructors if school would notify students when they receive confirmation list for this years NMF. Answer was no, but contact principal and ask directly, but in course of discussion learned that a student from our HS got a rejection letter early last week.
