NMF rejection letters go out very soon...heads up!

I am very sympathetic to posters that didn’t NMF status because of apparent changes to standards from previous years. There are schools that are generous with NMSF scholarships which you (or your kids) are qualified for that unfortunately some high scorers (because of state residency) or someone who was ill that day (and missed by one point) are unable to receive. You have bright kids, count your blessings!

Anyone had good news from their HS principal yet???

Letters were sent yesterday so some schools will receive them today. Our school probably won’t get them until next week.

There were 4 semifinalists from my school, myself included. Today, my school’s Facebook page posted saying “[Girl who is not me] is our National Merit Finalist.” My mother asked our principal and he confirmed that she was the only Finalist from our school. But I have not received a rejection letter, and neither have the others from my school. I have a decent GPA, great SATs, no disciplinary problems… Is it possible that there was just a mix-up? It seems odd that the vast majority of semifinalists make it, but 75% of those from my school would be rejected.

Nemesis, have you or the other two students called NMSC? Would your school be willing to call? Not sure they’ll give info over the phone, but it’s worth a try. Many of us are now freaking out all over again, thinking that our rejection letters are delayed in the mail. Thanks!

Nemesis, another thought: Is “Girl who is not you” possibly a National Achievement Finalist?

Nemesis - perhaps it was a National Acheivement Finalist announcement? That came up on my son’s school’s website today (the NAF letters are mailed sooner, I believe). There are 15 NMSFs in his class - but no announcement yet - only the NAFs. Seems unlikely to me that 3 of your rejection letters are lost in the mail…

That would make a lot more sense, she could definitely be a National Achievement finalist. My school’s Facebook page said National Merit, and my principal said Merit, but they make mistakes all the time… Let’s just say their critical reading scores wouldn’t be very good. :P

Is that student AA? If so, then it probably is a NA finalist announcement and the principal is confused since the notification also comes from NMCorp. Last year, some people had the same confusion. It seems that the NA finalists are notified a little bit earlier.

My daughter has not received any notice about NMF status yet (fingers crossed), but all these rejection posts really got me to thinking…
Many of her college acceptance letters have said something along the lines of “this year’s applicant pool was the most qualified & competitive we have ever seen”. We were told the same thing in person by admissions reps. Maybe they were not just blowing smoke. I have a son already in college & I don’t remember them making as big of a deal out of the talent pool when he was in this process. I know a lot of people are unhappy with the NM decisions, but sounds like they are having to do some add’l weeding to get to their target number. Maybe more kids than usual filled out the required paperwork, have corresponding SAT scores, & no discipline problems.
Guess we all got our vitamins around '94 & '95.

Btw this is for the disappointed kids that didn’t advance:
My son got 35 on his ACT, had only 1 B in high school, got 4’s or 5’s on several AP tests, & played 2 sports. He missed NMSF by 5 points his year. Such was life. He got into several great schools & had good scholarship offers. He’s doing great in ChemE @ UTAustin (which gives precious little merit aid anyway).

No letter from NMSC, no notification from GC or principal yet, but two letters from colleges offering $$ to National Merit finalists (one school he’s already been accepted at &.offered a separate scholarship for). Not sure what to make of all that…

Sent from my SGH-T769 using CC

JUST BE HAPPY GUYS
It’s already the month of LOVE

Re message #311

Yesterday I got a letter from the University of Oklahoma and it said “Colleges and universities are not notified of the student’s standing in the competition beyond the public announcement of Semifinalist”

We got the same letter. I think the colleges may just be going on the assumption that 15/16 are finalists so most letters will get into the hands of finalists. Still waiting to hear anything here…

Still waiting for son’s NMF notification in Texas. Nothing yet from school GC or NMSC!

I asked our GC via email today. D has to send an email to her colleges telling them about a minor schedule change (she swapped one fine arts course for another one), and the GC wants her to run the draft email by her before it is sent. So the GC and I were emailing… and I asked if she knew about NMF, as then D could include this info in her email. She said she would check with the principal to see if he has heard, and get back to me. So maybe we will hear something today…

WOW- NM is harsh! I had posted earlier about the kid who had gotten a rejection letter and his school appealed. So FX county semester just ended and transcripts won’t be available for another week at least. So his mom called NM to ask if he could send his first semester grade report instead of the transcript (for the appeal- don’t need to send updated grades otherwise) and NM told her, don’t bother- we have already rejected the appeal.

Yep. I was told by a recruiter at OU that they are not notified but that if kids have not received a rejection by early last week, they can assume they are a finalist.

Principal called DH - DS is a finalist. Good luck to those still waiting to hear!

Anyone get rejected for a lowish SAT?

No C’s but many B’s?

Anything other than C’s, paperwork or disciplinary issues???

The new Accepted STATS thread looks like those accepted had really high GPAs…
