I believe, it is an SAT Composite of 1960, using the Writing Multiple Choice score rather than the regular Writing with essay score.

Yes, this is correct. I called NM and was told to multiply the MC writing score by ten and use that in place of the essay score. The minimum required score is 1960.

There’s a difference between the W MC score and the W w/ essay score?

Yes, a 1960 SAT is high enough, but the writing score is calculated oddly. The multiple choice subscore is used and multiplied by 10 and then added to the M and CR.

When you check your scores on college board, click ‘understanding your scores’ then under writing click ‘your score details.’ In the upper left just beneath the writing score there is your multiple choice score. There are 49 questions, but it is scaled up to 80.

My D just got refection letter. Her SAT score is 2290. I don’t why she got rejected

^^ Sorry to hear that. See here for any possible problems:

What are the qualifications to go from NMSF to NMF?
After you’ve been named NMSF, you’ll have some paperwork to fill out (now done online). You’ll have an essay to write as well. YOUR SCHOOL will have to fill out a recommendation and include a copy of your grades/transcript. If you have good grades (usually no more than 1 or 2 C semester grades), you haven’t been a discipline problem, you have a SAT over the minimum (1960+), you’ve sent your SAT to NMCorp, you write a decent essay, then you’ll make NMF.

You also have to be at least a US Permanent Resident if not a US Citizen.

They seem to be quite a bit tighter this year. I have already talked to one kid who got a rejection letter today and he only had one C and one C+ for semester grades and a 2350 on SATs. His mom called Nat Merit and they gave boilerplate about “highest academic standards” and that his grades had not met it- so this year, two Cs are not enough. He had no discipline issues, a counselor rec, submitted the SATs on time, etc.

@ROCKFISHDG, Thanks for the info. My D didn’t complete one of her flvs course (online course - out side of school). She is retaking it now… may be that caused it.

At school so far all grades are A, no discipline issues, all form are submitted on-time.

Was the letter mailed to home or to school?

My DS SAT was 1950, but he’s had stellar grades all 3 1/2 years (nothing below a A-), with a mostly honors/AP load. We’ll see if a letter comes today or not. If they use 1960 as a cut off, then he’s out of luck. Overall, it doesn’t matter to any of the schools he’s applying to for scholarship, maybe just to help his chances.

McMomma - did you use the formula referenced in this thread to figure out the 1950? My DS’s score went up 10 pts from his actual score when I used NMC formula.

No - I didn’t. I’ll have to go back and check that - it would be great if it raised his score, that would put him right where he needs to be (which maybe is why he hasn’t received a rejection letter yet??)

Thanks Mommaof5! :)

S got rejection letter today. Looks like 2 Cs does you in. Everything else was ok. Planning to appeal. Anyone know how?

You have to call the NMSC office (number is on their website) and ask them about the process of appealing the decision. The lady is fairly helpful and will pull up your file and tell you why you were rejected if you ask.

Essentially, your school head (principal) has to write a letter explaining the circumstances of the grades.

^^ tjmom – Yikes! Was the kid you talked to from VA? We are in Northern VA. My D has one C on her transcript from a first year math teacher that everyone had problems with last year who got dismissed midway through third quarter. I think her GC may have explained the circumstances on the rec – at least we asked him to do so. I thought we’d escape the dreaded rejection letter with just one C. Now we have to wait out February and hope to receive no mail from NMSC.

Just got my rejection letter…I was rejected because of my grades. I have received one 74 in AP World History my sophomore year, and other than that As and Bs. I got a 230 on my PSAT, a 2300 SAT, I have an unweighted gpa of 3.7 and a weighted GPA of 4.8 and am ranked 38 out of 1024 in my graduating class. Frankly, I was shocked when I received my letter. I assume I didn’t advance because of my 74, however it was in an AP class, and had I taken an honors or level history I surely would have gotten an A or B. What are my chances in an appeal? Would asking the teacher I received a 74 from to call NMSC be helpful? Despite my grade he still liked me as a student.

Pingis…Wow, that seems harsh. I always heard that one C is ok.

Maybe there was a glitch in the system and rejection letters went to those who are Finalists… ^^
A girl can hope.
