NMF rejection letters go out very soon...I think they go out around the end of this week/beginning of next week. Supposedly NMCorp is getting Dec SAT scores now.

So, if you (or your child) gets rejected and you think that some special consideration should be given, don't be afraid to appeal the rejection. Some appeals were successful last year.

For everyone else...if you don't get a rejection letter by about mid-month, you know you made it. :)

What do you mean exactly? My school hasn’t even got PSAT scores back yet, so I don’t even know if I made the cut. Does that put me behind on anything?

Yikes…between wanting acceptance notifications from colleges, and NOT wanting a no letter from NMS…kiddo is wearing a path out to the mailbox and back…fingers crossed!

13auer…not for juniors… The rejection letters go to seniors.

BTW…your school likely rec’d your PSAT scores in Dec…they’re just holding onto them until the GC can go over them with the students.

Mommafrog…if your child didn’t have any issues, then no worries about making NMF. Those who don’t make NMF typically cause the problem with grade issues, too low SAT, discipline problem at school, or didn’t do the paperwork…or wrote a rude essay (like a student at my kid’s school did once.)

Quomodo…Finalists are notified in February by their schools. I can’t remember if a letter is sent home also. I just remember that I happened to be on campus the day that the school found out and the principal came up and mentioned it.

^ I received a letter from the NMSC (dated dec. 20) confirming that they had received my complete application and reminding me to send them my Fall transcript “no later than Feb. 1” … Is this something everyone received? If so, then how could they “reject” anyone before the “due date”??

I didn’t get the letter about the transcript nor did I get a confirmation they received my materials. I assume they did most of that correspondence directly with my school.

I am anxiously dreading this rejection letter… I have a 3.8 W but my transcript is mostly B’s with a few C’s as well so I think I am probably one of the recipients… I did have extenuating circumstances though, so I plan to appeal. What exactly is the appeal process and has anyone on here been through it successfully? What did you do?

Hopefully someone from last year’s appeal process will post.

otherwise, if you do get a rejection letter, contact NMCorp and ask how you can appeal.

When you say that you have some C’s…what do you mean? Are the C’s quarter grades or semester grades? Quarter grades aren’t usually put on transcripts. How many semester grade C’s do you have? Were they in AP classes or what?

mom2collegekids, I had C’s in Algebra Honors and Geometry Honors for both semesters, a 79 in Honors Chem for one semester and a 77 in AP Art History for one semester. The math grades were due to math anxiety which I think my counselor might have explained in my letter. At this point, I’ve kind of come to terms with the fact a rejection is likely and I’m just hoping I find some success in appealing.

If it helps, I got a 64 on my math PSAT and a 680 on my math SAT which is in the 90th percentile…

I was wondering what a qualifying SAT score is? Also, if you took the SAT sophomore year does that score count or must you take it junior or senior year?

if you took the SAT sophomore year does that score count or must you take it junior or senior year?

Any SAT test that you take between October of your Sophomore year and December of your Senior year will OK. NMSC will accept it.
You can find this information on page 2 of the document called " Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalist". Every semifinalist should have it.
You can also find it at NMSC web-site at

I was wondering what a qualifying SAT score is?

The qualifying SAT score is the score that confirm your PSAT score. The score for this year is 1960 and it is set by NMSC.

My school doesn’t calculate UW for us but I think its around 3.3/3.4… My SAT score is 2210 if that has any effect. I am ranked almost top quarter but my school is pretty difficult and has that reputation as such… You need a 4.2 W to be in top 10%.

I just checked my text messages and D texted me on Feb 8th at 8:31am last year with the happy words “I MADE FINALIST!” (yes, I kept the text We had been on pins & needles because of semester C’s in Honors Chemistry.

M2CK’s calming words that we would have heard otherwise by mid January kept me sane until I got the text. For those of you waiting, there were a couple of CC members who successfully appealed rejections last year.

I made semifinalist but had no desire to take the SAT (I live in ACT country), and I still have not received a rejection letter, though I did receive a very nice letter telling me that my (non-existent) SAT scores were late and I still had time to send them.
