NMF Scholarship question

If you are an NMF entering USC, what does your letter from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation say in terms of the amount of the award? Is the entire amount of the half tuition scholarship printed in the blank after "Officials of the sponsor institution have determined the amount of your stipend and have reported to NMSC that it will be_____ a year," or is a different amount listed there? I'm concerned that my S's letter lists a way smaller sum, and I'm wondering if this is usual, or if we have something to worry about and address with USC. Thanks!

As I understand it, the USC Presidential scholarship is for those students who are accepted to USC and in writing designate that USC is their FIRST choice university to the National Merit Corp. National Merit has different awards–college based, national merit corp. based, and corporate sponsored. You need to read the letter which National Merit Corp. mails to its finalists and follow all of the procedures. Every scholarship award is worth a different amount of money. Once you know all of the scholarships your child has received and been notified to USC, you should see the scholarships amount listed on your child’s tuition statement bill so that you know how much you have to pay after scholarships have been awarded.

the letter you got probably lists the 1,000$ a year you get in addition to the half scholarship. Both the 1,000$ and the 19,000$ should be posted on your online financial aid summary

agree you financial aid package should list the presidential scholarship and a $1000 NMF scholarship.

You do have to let the NMF know USC is your top pick and the aid is posted later than the original aid package which did not have the scholarships listed. At least that is what happened in my son’s case. I don’t remember how much time it took to change his package but it was awhile.

I can’t find that letter, but I wouldn’t worry about it. In my son’s case, it took USC a bit of time to show the half-tuition award on the Oasis financial aid page. When it does appear there, it will just say Presidential Scholar, without reference to NM, as far as I know. On the $1,000, I’m fairly certain that did not show up on Oasis. It magically (after maybe a letter or two saying S’s financial aid had been updated) appeared in October in the form of a $500 credit.

Thank you for the responses. Very reassuring!

mine shows up. 500 per semester. specifically designated as national merit money

not that it helped me anyway  my need-based grant got taken out dollar-for-dollar
