how much of the total oos cost (tuition, room and board, books, etc) does the asu NMF scholarship cover? i heard it was a full tuition plus (23k/year)

It covers $17,000 of tuition, which is most of it. It also helps you with getting into the honors college there.

so if you are an OOS student you end up paying roughly just room and board?

Yes, basically, you’re just paying for room and board. If you’re NMF or SF, I would advise visiting the school. Honestly, that’s what made up my mind to attend. They have something just for National Merit Scholars called a Student Experience Day where you can stay overnight, meet the students, tour the campus, meet with the Dean, and meet with a faculty advisor in your area of interest.

NMF dropped to $11,000 starting this year.

The baseline, not the maximum, dropped I believe.

Keep in mind that the in-state and out-of-state amounts for NMF also vary. In past years, NMF finalists have received full tuition and most of room and board. For example, I believe in-state NMF was $12,500 within the last couple of years, while tuition and fees are around $6700.

Well, I know for a fact that this year’s entering NMFs got 17,000 out of state. The best way to find out the number for this year is to call the undergraduate admission office. They have an option to press some number and speak to a representative if you’re a scholar. That’s how I found out the amout when I applied.

It isn’t full tuition anymore. Last year I paid around $8500 for the year with a $23,000 scholarship (NMF for '13). So you’d probably pay more than $14,500. Honors fees are going up (I believe freshmen have to pay $1000?), and likely tuition is as well. Not a bad deal, but not as good as it used to be. I’m not sure I would’ve come with that amount.
