NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

My son is getting full ride at Tulsa in Comp Sci & loves it and loves being in the Honors Program. He was a NMF last year and is in his freshman year at Tulsa.

I just read on the Tulsa Campus paper that they are changing their NMF presidential scholar approach. It sounds like maybe they are reducing their number (it was around 70 scholarships per year) for NMF and are increasing the scholarships for other highly qualified applicants.

It does not give specifics, but might be something to ask about if you are considering tulsa.

[The Collegian Online: University reshapes financial aid budget](http://www.utulsa.edu/collegian/article.asp?article=4388)

Graceandpeace,
Thatā€™s interesting! My son will be applying to U of Tulsa next year. I suppose he doesnā€™t need to rely on NMF, seeing as his other stats are great, but we did like the concept of full ride for NMF at Tulsa. Oh well. He could fare well either way, I suppose.

Anybody else have kids currently on NMF full-rides at any of these listed schools?

Anybody else have kids currently on NMF full-rides at any of these listed schools?

I have a son who has a full-ride at Bama and loves it. Bama includes their Super Suites housing in their package. The laptop that they give is a professional model - very nice!

In addition, if youā€™re a Comp Sci or Engineering major, you get an additional $2500/yr stacked on top if you have at least a 30ACT or 1330 M+CR SAT.

Alsoā€¦If you do a semester abroad, Bama also gives you the semester tuition amount (for OOS students, that is $10k) to use in addition to the $2k study abroad money. Not bad! :)

Wow! Thatā€™s amazing, mom2collegekids! That sounds like a really good package for NMF! What are some of the things he loves about Bama? And is he engineering? (My son will be, somewhere.)

^^^

I have 2 sons at Bama on scholarships. Older son is majoring in math & is in their Computer-Based Honors Program. Younger son has a double major - Chemical Engineering and Biology (so he has the stacked engineering scholarship on top of his other scholarship). Heā€™s also in Honors.

Bama has recently built 9 new science and engineering buildings - which are connected to each other (The Shelby Science and Engineering Complex), so everything is very state of the art and beautiful. Four more buildings are being built now, and then 4 more after that. When complete, it will be one of the largest science and engineering complexes in the US.

UA Shelby Science & Engineering Complex - Phase I (complete) http://www.bama.ua.edu/~chem/facilities/buildings/shelbytour/tour.html</a></p>

Phase II (complete) http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=TL&Date=20090720&Category=FRONTPAGE&ArtNo=720009998&Ref=PH&Profile=1007&Params=Itemnr=1</a></p>

Hereā€™s an aerial view of the 9 connected buildings http://web.as.ua.edu/home/news/2009/mailnews/october/webmail.php</a>

I tried to send you a PM with this info, but you donā€™t allow PMs.

Good thing, or else I wouldnā€™t have gotten to see these! Thanks for the links.

Glad they were helpful for you. I forgot to add that for the aerial view, you have to scroll down. LOL

Iā€™m surprised I didnā€™t notice this omission before, since my son has been offered it.

The University of Mississippi offers a complicated package to Finalists with a 3.0 GPA (are there any Finalists without a 3.0 GPA?) as described in cumbersome detail on this web page:

[The University of Mississippi ? Office of Financial Aid](http://www.olemiss.edu/finaid/scholarshiptypes.html)

I believe there are three separate guaranteed awards of $8,630, $1,000, and (if youā€™re out-of-state) $7,938. Thatā€™s a total of $9,630 for in-state students and $17,568 for out-of-state students. In either case this covers the cost of tuition, room, and board minus about $4,000.

This would put Ole Miss in the category of ā€œfull tuition +ā€.

o Must guarantee at least 5k or full tuition competitive to be eligible for Honorable Mention.

Ursinus sent our D a letter urging her to apply and name their school as her number-1 choice by April 1. They offer NMFs a $30K per year scholarship, renewable for 4 years.

I donā€™t know if thatā€™s something to add to the list or not. :)

It seems like NMF is only one of many criteria for this (very selective) scholarship. Did your Dā€™s letter imply otherwise?

xandra, you are correct. there seem to be more requirements for the scholarship than just NMF, but the implication was ā€œname us number-1 and you have a good chance.ā€ i have to look at the letter again to see. i wonder if ursinus offers NMF something even if not this particular scholarship.

btw, oklahoma sent her an email saying that their application deadline is 4/1! so if kids donā€™t get into their ā€œdreamā€ schools, OSU seems like an excellent opportunity for NMFs.

USCā€™s half-off tuition is worth quite a lot, $20k per year. Itā€™s an expensive school.

Students who are named National Merit Semifinalists or National Achievement Semifinalists will be awarded Furman Scholarships totaling at least $14,000.National Merit/National Achievement finalists who indicate Furman as their first-choice college may be eligible for a renewable university-sponsored scholarship, in accordance with National Merit Scholarship Corporation guidelines.
