NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

Hi Keilexandra, thanks for the dedicated updates. I got my notification of finalist status about two weeks ago, since been sifting through the various offers out there. Your list has been most helpful.

An additional suggestion- Gonzaga offers $6250/year to NMF guaranteed— see

[Scholarship Opportunities - Gonzaga University](<a href=“Admission | Gonzaga University”>Admission | Gonzaga University)

Also, when you say that you find a school “notable”, what criteria are you using? I read through the previous postings and it seemed you meant academically strong?

correction to the private list:
^Northeastern U (full tuition guaranteed)
–not competitive -that’s from the Northeastern University’s financial aid representative responsible for awarding these scholarships, during their accepted student open house last week.

also, new addition to the private list:
Drexel University (full tuition guaranteed)
–brand new scholarship, confirmed with phone call to Drexel’s financial aid office.

Notable is just, well, just that: schools that I find personally notable for giving a guaranteed NMF scholarship. The majority are academically strongest on the list, but I also include a few obscure schools like Wesleyan College, a women’s college in GA that was recommended by curmudgeon in a post on LAC merit aid several years ago. Curm is basically a CC legend when it comes to LAC merit aid, so I trust his judgment.

Gonzaga added under Honorable Mention Privates:
Gonzaga U (6.25k guaranteed)

Northeastern’s website says clearly that 100 students will receive a NMF full tuition or Trustee full ride scholarship. Can you give me a paraphrased quote of what the rep said? I’ll note it as disputed for now.

http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/costs/scholarships.html</a></p>

I asked her if they give National Merit Finalist Scholarships at full tuition. She said yes. I asked if they were competitive, and she looked back at me quizzically. I paraphrased and asked if every National Merit Finalist will be given a full tuition scholarship, or if there is a limited number of them to give out, and she replied that every national merit finalist that sends them a copy of their notification letter by March 1st, showing Northeastern as their first choice college, will get a full tuition scholarship, guaranteed.
I asked if she was sure, and she said that she is the one in charge of awarding them, and she is the final word on this matter.

LMDB–Do you have any more specifics on Drexel? I checked out their website and it was quite vague, though did say a full tuition scholarship.

And, how lenient are these colleges about their application deadlines? Many were never ones that I had considered until I realized the $$$ available as for a NMF… now I’m going, wow can i still apply to any of these? So…
Do you think any would still accept applications? (I’m referring to the private LAC’s for the most part here; I’d rather go somewhere that would still be very academically rigorous. Not to bash on any of the publics but… lol

oh sorry LMDB, hadn’t refreshed. thanx.

Re Drexel:
during phone call with admissions rep a few days ago, I was denied opportunity to submit recent accomplishments to strengthen competitive standing for full ride scholarship. Just before hanging up, I began to express disappointment at not being able to report Finalist standing, among other things, and he stopped me short with an “…Oh!, wait a minute… there IS a brand new scholarship for NM Finalists…here, email Mr. so-and-so for more details…” It may be too new to appear on their web site. When I asked the admissions rep if they needed the award letter to show Drexel as first choice, he said no, they didn’t care about that. I’m not sure I trust him on that, though. Just to be safe, I blanked out the other college’s name on the letter before sending a copy to him. I guess I’ll find out when the new fa report arrives.

Ah thanx much, I just went on their website, and was pleased to be able to apply via Common App ahead of the serendipitous March 1 deadline. So who knows, maybe I’ll be eligible for full tuition there.

hi everyone, thanks for this great list! i am a junior who is expecting ( hopefully!) to get NMF---- 220 in CA. But i was wondering, why don’t people prep much for the PSAT so that they could win some of these great scholarships? Thanks especially for the Northeastern and Drexel additions of guaranteed full tuition; they are in very attractive locations

^ Good question! We had no idea. Just thought it was a practice test for the SAT. I think a lot of kids might even skip it (they take it once as a freshman and then never again). Our D knew, but I don’t think she realized HOW big of a deal it was until now.

WOW. What a valuable list! Many thanks to the industrious person who is maintaining this thread. I am new to College Confidential, and this posting alone could save our family big $$$. BTW, I think U of Kansas may have changed their policy regarding NMF awards – it appears that even out-of-state NMFs can receive the 10k award. See below, this copied from their website today:

National Merit, National Achievement, and National Hispanic Scholarship
(Kansas and out-of-state)

You must take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), which serves as the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test, during the fall of your junior year. If you become a finalist, and designate KU as your first college choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and/or College Board will forward your name to KU to be sponsored as a scholar. Award: $10,000/year, renewable for four years.

this is ridiculously helpful, thanks so much!

i know, it’s really weird how many kids don’t seem to care about the PSAT. my school pays for sophomores to take it, but not juniors, so maybe 40-50% of juniors take it. and NO ONE studies for it. when i told people i studied for it, they looked at me like i was crazy.

Beloit offers $5k/year, and it looks like it’s guaranteed.
