Although many schools list hard deadlines, in reality, most of those are “guidelines”. You need to ask each school specifically those questions. Most will give you some leeway to mid April or so. Still before the May 1 deadline, but at least after admissions notification.

It is absolutely possible that two deadlines may conflict with each other. In that case, you may have to decide between them without knowing admittance.

It looks like Ball State University no longer offers full rides for NMFs.

[Ball State University - National Recognition Scholarships](http://cms.bsu.edu/AdmissionsLanding/ScholarshipsandFinancialAid/TypesofAid/Scholarships/BallStateScholarships/NationalRecognitionScholarships.aspx)

That’s only $1,000 short of tuition, room, and board if you’re in-statea bargainbut $13,000 short if you’re out-of-state. Ball State ain’t worth that much.

So as not to confuse anyone, Loyola University Chicago is a private school.

[UC21 Scholarship, University of Cincinnati](http://www.admissions.uc.edu/scholarships/uc21.html)

It appears that UCincinnati offers:
Award Value:
The scholarship will cover the cost of current UC full-time, in-state tuition and fees (non-Ohio residents are required to pay the non-resident tuition surcharge).
The scholarship will also cover the UC multiple occupancy base room rate for students living in UC residence halls or UC-affiliated housing.
Students assume the responsibility of board plan and any added costs beyond the base UC rate.
Room expenses for scholars choosing to live off-campus will be the responsibility of the student.
All unmarried first-year students, who are not residing with their parents inside a 50-mile radius of the Clifton campus, are required to live in the residence halls during their first academic year.
Recipients will be offered a one-time allocation of $1,500 during their enrollment at UC toward one of the following based on a student-submitted proposal:
Desktop or laptop computer purchase – Proposal must detail the estimated cost of the computer hardware and associated software;
Undergraduate research study – Undergraduate research to be conducted with approximate costs outlined and support letter provided by either the student’s academic advisor or a faculty-sponsor; or
Study-abroad experience – Proposal must outline the study-abroad experience and be approved by UC’s Institute for Global Studies and Affairs.
Recipients remain responsible for all expenses not specifically described above including but not limited to books and supplies, supplemental texts, meal plan, room charges while on co-op, and personal articles.
They offer a maximum of 50 annually, but they only hit 23 as of the last NMSC annual report so I wouldn’t expect it to fill.

To make a correction regarding George Washington University:

I applied to GWU this year as a National Merit Finalist, and was told that the 15k a year is NOT guaranteed, despite what the website says–the award could be greater, less, or nonexistent.

I was told by the admissions officer that they do not offer awards solely on the basis of National Merit Status. I was told that, by nature of their PSAT scores, it is expected that National Merit Finalists will have the SAT/ACT scores AND the GPA to receive a competitive Presidential Scholarship, but there is NO specific NMS offered at GWU.

For the record, I was offered a 20k Presidential Scholarship from GWU.

I think this reflects something broader about the opportunities presented to National Merit Scholars. It isn’t the National Merit Scholarship itself–it’s the extremely high SAT scores and high GPA that present us with opportunities, so I think it’s worth noting that literally any school in the country could potentially be a full ride simply because we, as a group, are so competitive, and we need to look outside of simply NM-oriented scholarships.

For example, American University offers no NM-specific scholarships, however, I was awarded a 27k a year Presidential Scholarship (approx. 1/2 total cost of attendance) and admission to their Honors Program. As a NMF, literally every school in the country must be considered as a possibility and investigated.

Gemini, you make a good point, but you’re overreaching. First of all, many schools do NOT give merit aid, period. They’re need-only. Think Ivy League. Along with those, other top schools give merit aid only to the tippy-top candidates. Think U. of Chicago.

Then, this thread is not about that. This thread is about automatic scholarships for NMFs. There are other threads for merit awards. This thread is so useful because it’s really hard to ferret out this information otherwise. Sometimes, if you or your kid is a NMF, you just want a school you know to apply to where a scholarship will be waiting. This is the thread for that.

The compilation has been updated for all new information; I’ve been away too long to respond to individual corrections, but thank you, everyone.

I just went and checked on the GWU website, where it says “GW guarantees Presidential Academic Scholarships in amounts of $15,000 per year to National Merit Finalists”. How many applicants (or applicant’s parents) would think to ask the adcom “So, I see on your website that you offer a guaranteed scholarship for NMFs. Could you confirm that for me?” Maybe I should start doing that for every bit of information on GW’s website? I don’t think it’s asking too much to have agreement between information on the website, and information being disseminated by adcoms.

D1 will be interviewing at GWU at the end of the summer. She’s got the test scores, but her GPA reflects attending a school with serious grade deflation. Here’s to hoping she (and/or our pocketbook) doesn’t get shafted by this.

^ I’m no lawyer, but I think GWU could be liable for something if they present false marketing information on their website. They need to change that if it is no longer accurate.

in addition to the $10k guaranteed scholarship at the University of Kansas, there is also a $5k scholarship (competitive, 16 students) for National Merit finalists through the alumni association

This is just a minor clarification for Univ. of Vermont OOS Nat’l Merit “Green Mountain” scholarship – in addition to the guaranteed 10k, student is eligible for Presidential or Trustee scholarship (Pres.= $5-6k a yr.; Trustee=$1-3k). The above mentioned scholarships are automatic, based on class rank and standardized test scores.
From website:
“Recipients are awarded a four-year (eight semester) scholarship of up to $10,000 annually. This scholarship may be combined with a Presidential or Trustees Scholarship.”

Given that Presidential scholarship qualifications = top 20% of their graduating class and at least a 1200 SAT Critical Reading and Math or 27 ACT composite, my guess is that most NMF would be eligible for a total of $16k a year.

This may help out some students; too bad the OOS tuition is still $30,744k a year!

This is a note to the OP of this thread, who has maintained this list faithfully: MANY thanks to you and good luck in college, as I believe you (or S or D?) are about to begin soon. This list has enlightened anyone who has followed this part of CC, and has saved families thousands of dollars. I don’t know if OP is a student or a parent, but you should be commended for your efforts. Once again, thank you, and good luck this semester.

I wish I had found this thread before DD’s senior year. She may have applied some different places.
