NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

Also, butterflies, what schools do does change some each year, so you do need to double check.

“schools that give BIG NMF scholarships will designate only a small amount as their “official NMF” scholarship.”

Not sure what you mean by this?–There are many schools that offer very large scholarships (half tuition, full tuition, tuition/fees/room/board etc.) to NMFs. (Most Finalists are not “Scholars” named by the NM Corp.–Are you confusing “Finalists” and the scholarships offered to Finalists with the scholarships given through the NM Corp. to “Scholars?”)

atomom - There is a difference between the scholarships being given that you describe for NMFs vs actually calling them NMF scholarships. Different universities call them by different names and but also designate a small portion as mentioned as the official NMF scholarship provided by them so students can choose a bigger NMF scholarship from other entities (so they are allowing to collect an extra 1500 in this particular case). If you check USC website, they don’t call their half tuition or full tuition by an NMF name tag but President’s, Regent’s, etc.

Those LARGE NMF scholarships from colleges are NOT the “official” NMF scholarship…only a small bit of them are…like $1k per year.

I gave my son’s situation as an example…

He accepted my H’s company’s Official NMF scholarship of 2500 per year.

He also accepted Alabama’s big NMF scholarship…
free tuition
free housing
study abroad money
laptop
BUT…he had to REJECT the “official” part of Bama’s NMF scholarship - which is $1k per year.

He had to reject the $1k per year since he was accepting the 2500 per year from H’s company. And, you can only accept ONE official NMF scholarship.

he still got the unofficial NMF scholarship from Bama…tuition, room, laptop, study abroad money.

The official part is managed thru NMCorp. A college sends the “official part” to the NMCorp, and then NMCorp returns it to the school…crazy, I know.

Was your son a “Scholar” or a “Finalist” (all Scholars designated by the NM Corp. are Finalists, but only a minority of Finalists are “Scholars”)
Most Finalists don’t need to turn down “official” NM Scholarships because they don’t receive them. I am still confused–maybe it is simply because you are using “F” where it doesn’t belong? (National Merit Finalist Scholarship?) instead of “National Merit Scholarship?” There is a difference between scholarships that colleges will give to any “NM Finalist” and those given only to those chosen by NM Corp. as “NM Scholars” --Which would be called “National Merit Scholarships”–not “National Merit Finalist Scholarships.”

My son was a NMScholar. Anyone who gets an **official **NMF scholarship (one that is managed thru NMCorp) is a Scholar.

My son’s corporate NM scholarship is managed thru NMCorp.

He was named a SCHOLAR.

Actually, lots of NMFs become scholars. Any student who accepts a college NMF scholarship that has the “official” part attached is a NM SCHOLAR.

you may be thinking that only the ones who get the one time 2500 are Scholars…that’s not true. Any NMF who is awarded a scholarship **that is managed through NMCorp **is named a Scholar.

There is a difference between scholarships that colleges will give to any “NM Finalist” and those given only to those chosen by NM Corp. as “NM Scholars” -

Not really.

Every NMF that accepts Alabama’s NMF scholarship is named a NMScholar by NMCorp because of the official $1k that is routed thru NMCorp and awarded by NMCorp.

When my son went thru the process, NMCorp called us to manage the whole thing so our son would get the most money.

*Types of Merit ScholarshipÂŽ Awards
Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, NMSC notifies approximately **8,400 Finalists at their home addresses that they have been selected to receive a Merit ScholarshipÂŽ award. **Merit Scholarship awards are of three types:

•National Merit® $2500 Scholarships
Every Finalist competes for these single payment scholarships, which are awarded on a state representational basis. Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans.
•Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
Corporate sponsors designate their awards for children of their employees or members, for residents of a community where a company has operations, or for Finalists with career plans the sponsor wishes to encourage. These scholarships may either be renewable for four years of undergraduate study or one-time awards.
•College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
Officials of each sponsor college select winners of their awards from Finalists who have been accepted for admission and have informed NMSC by the published deadlines that the sponsor college or university is their first choice. These awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. The published deadlines for reporting a sponsor college as first choice can be viewed on page 3 of the Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists in the 2011 National MeritÂŽ Scholarship Program. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.)

Since there are about 15000 finalists, and about 8400 are selected for NM Scholarships, it’s not true to say that most don’t receive official NM scholarships. Over half do.

I think you’re just confused and think only those who get the one time 2500 are named scholars. The NM SCHOLARS are named on 3 dates…April, May, and July.

Read the square about halfway down on the right.

butterflies and atomom…Our D1’s scholarship package from U of Minnesota may answer both your questions, although each school may handle their own monies slightly different.

U of Minn has an “official” university sponsored scholarship that she was awarded for $1K per year for 4 years (could have been up to $2K per year if financial need had been higher). This award is managed by NMSC (the U gives them the money, and they send it back to the U in D1’s name) and thus she is deemed a National Merit Scholar since she was a Finalist who received one of the 3 “official” NMSC awards.

She also received the Gold Scholar Award ($10K per year/4 years) which is given to NMF’s who designate U of Minn as their first choice college. Although it sounds like similar criteria for the “official” NMSC award, this is an award that is solely handled through the university and is considered an “unofficial” National Merit scholarship.

Based on the overall strength of her application, she was also considered for and awarded other “university wide” merit scholarships that had no direct connection to her National Merit status.

As I said, different schools handle their NMF money/policies differently…and it can be very confusing sometimes. In the grand scheme of things, the “official” NMSC award can be a very small amount when compared to the overall package for a NMF (Alabama is a good case in point) and whether a student is tabbed a National Merit Scholar or not doesn’t mean they won’t get a nice scholarship package. Hope D1’s example maybe helps to clarify things a little.

Excuse me if this was asked before.

Are the “full ride+guaranteed/competitive” for oos students too?

It varies from school to school on what is offered for IS and OOS students. Often the scholarships are for OOS because states like to attract top talent from other states.

*
