NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

atomom - I saw the letter from Nebraska. I was interpreting the Chancellor’s scholarship as a consideration and not automatic?

Oklahoma City University offers a full ride scholarship (tuition, room, board, and fees) for National Merit Finalists along with $400 per year for books.

NKAYYY, I heard about a student who didn’t apply to Pepperdine because they did not think there was enough scholarship money available to them there, and Pepperdine called him and asked why he hadn’t applied. In the end, they offered him a full ride. So while they may not list National Merit or have an automatic NM scholarship, its still worth getting in contact with them.

—Lipscomb University (Nashville, TN) is most recently listed on this thread as full tuition+ which is true for Semifinalists - but it also offers full rides to Finalists:

“National Merit finalists receive a full-ride scholarship including tuition, room, board, and fees. Semi-finalists receive a full tuition scholarship plus $2,000. Confirmation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation is required. If you receive one of these scholarships, you need to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or above.” ([Lipscomb University Admissions](<a href=“Admissions | Lipscomb University”>Admissions | Lipscomb University))

—Also, I found no evidence on the UMass Amherst website ([UMass Amherst: Financial Aid Services - Scholarships](<a href=“Financial Aid : UMass Amherst”>Financial Aid : UMass Amherst)) that their NM scholarships are only for in-state students. Can someone confirm this? “U of Massachusetts-Amherst (in-state full ride competitive)” is what is currently listed.

—Thirdly, if a NMF attends Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) they will receive $5K or more in scholarships. This happens in one of two scenarios: student does not receive other merit scholarships so they are given $5K, OR student receives other merit scholarship (most are full tuition I believe) and thus receives only an additional $2K for being a NMF, rather than $5K. In the running list of scholarships on this thread, Vanderbilt’s line says “Vanderbilt U (5k guaranteed + 2k if awarded competitive merit)” which is misleading. (source: [Additional Merit Scholarships | Scholarships | Vanderbilt University](Additional Merit Scholarships | Scholarships | Vanderbilt University))

Drexel is not an “official” nat’l merit scholarship school, but gives an automatic full tuition scholarship for 4 years to any admitted finalist.

How often does this list change???

Schools usually do not change their nmf scholarships once their app season is underway. Those who offer big nmf scholarships usually make their changes by summer’s end, so applicants know what is being offered.

Update! I contacted Pepperdine’s financial aid office. They only give $1,000 or $2,000 to NMFs. sigh.

My daughter is a National Hispanic Scholar. Any information for that program and the following schools: Abilene Christian, Texas Tech, Baylor, New Mexico State? Thank you in advance!

great questions try looking at the website

Texas Tech pulled out of National Merit Finalist Scholarship

I have received fee free application to the following colleges for my son. My son is NMSF. He has so far only applied to Stanford, USC, and Colorado school of Mine.
Washington and Lee
Saint Mary’s college of California
Case Western
Uniersity of the Pacific
Tulane
Rose-Hulmann
Eastern Oregon University
Colorado School Mine

Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio should be listed as an “Honorable Mention Private School” because its website states the following:

“National Merit finalists who list Xavier as their first choice and meet the application deadline are guaranteed at least a Trustee or Schawe scholarship, plus a $1,000-$2,000 renewable award depending on financial need, if they do not receive a corporate sponsored National Merit award.” ([Xavier University - Undergraduate Admission - Academic Scholarships](http://www.xavier.edu/undergraduate-admission/scholarships/academic.cfm))

The Trustee and Schawe scholarships range from $14,000 to $15,000 annually (see the same web address listed above). The school does offer 10 full tuition scholarships and $17,000/yr scholarships, which require interviews for finalists.

The sticker price tuition at Xavier University is slightly more than $30,000 annually, and room and board is slightly less than $10,000.

Looks like SMU changed recently from “1/2 tuition plus $2000” to “up to $5000, can be combined with other awards not to exceed full tuition and fees”

U of Kentucky has situation like this. The have the NMF Scholarship, and a “look a like” that offers $500 more a year in stipend to $1500.

If I understand you the first $2500 NMF scholarship is indedpendent and only good for the first year.

If I read this right you are saying you give up the first year stipend (1000 or in UofK case 1500) for the $2500, but would receive the stipend in future years.

What other schools other that the U of K offer the package you list here (full tuition, r and b, stipend, ipad2, $2000 Summer Abroad.)

*National Merit® or Achievement® Finalist
Patterson ScholarshipNational Merit® or Achievement® Finalists who desginate UK as their college choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by mid-April are eligible for the Patterson Scholarship. The Patterson Scholarship is in addition to the UK National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship of $2,000, which is awarded though the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The Patterson Scholarship is a renewable scholarship, valued at $68,000, and includes the following:

•Four-year renewable award covers the cost of tuition, room and board, $1,000 yearly stipend, an iPad2®, and $2,000 for a Summer Education Abroad program.
No Scholarship application is required for the UK National Merit®/Achievement® Finalist Patterson Scholarship, but finalists are encouraged to submit a completed Academic Scholarship application to be considered for the Singletary Scholarship Program.

If a student is awarded a Singletary Scholarship, that award will replace the Patterson Scholarship. Student may receive only one scholarship through the Academic Scholarship Program.

Alabama has a similar award, but it doesn’t cover the meal plan. However, Bama’s NMF scholarship does cover its pricier honors dorms…which have private bedrooms that are in a 4 bedroom suite that has a living room, kitchenette and 2 bathrooms.

Also, if you major in eng’g or comp sci, you get an additional 2500 per year…which would pay for meals.

Does anyone know any details of the UMass scholarship? Their website states:

Note that it says National Merit Scholars not Finalists or Semi-Finalists. Does that mean that the student has to be awarded an official NMSC $2500 scholarship or a corporate scholarship to qualify? They are not listed as offering an official school-based NM award, so a student wouldn’t become a NM Scholar by being awarded this scholarship. Did they just use the wrong word there, or do you have to actually earn another scholarship first to even be considered for this one?

Note that the wording has changed on their website and no longer says “in-state” as was quoted on page 1 of this thread.

^Jobrown, CC is not to be used for advertising.

Mathmomvt, I think I would just call the school on that one. The way it is worded, it sounds as though it is given to NMS who are planning to enroll, but most young people would need the scholarship info before thy commit. My guess is it that it should say NMF.

*Note that it says National Merit Scholars not Finalists or Semi-Finalists. Does that mean that the student has to be awarded an official NMSC $2500 scholarship or a corporate scholarship to qualify? *

I doubt it. For one thing, those who are named “Scholars” are named quite late…and more importantly, if the UMass NMF scholarship is “official” then the 2500 winners can’t get 2 awards.

Anyone who gets an official NMF scholarship is a Scholar…not just the 2500 winners.
