NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

RE: Oklahoma State U. (Not to be confused with U. of Oklahoma–which is referred to as “OU”)

Full tuition/fees are covered, in-state or out-of-state. The additional dollar amount adds up to $8,500. The total cost of room and board is $8,350. “Full-ride” usually includes tuition, fees, room and board–not books (although you’d have $150 left for that).

Anyone know if there are any merit scholarships at Michigan tied to NMF? I know MSU is listed on the compliation, but no mention of University of Michigan.

U of Michigan does not give NMF scholarships.

Question about Miami of Ohio: S13 just got letter with very nice scholarship based on grades/ACT plus being selected into the scholars program (extra $2000). No mention of NMF status. Is there the potential for more $ if we move from NMSF to NMF?

Also, any chance for NMF $ from UT-Austin? UT-Arlington keeps sending info. but S13 is only interested in Austin. We are OOS for both Miami of Ohio & Texas.

UT Austin has no NMF money. They have discontinued the scholarships.

All other schools in Texas have some offers for NMF except for UT Austin.

University of Texas Dallas has a good offer for National Merit Scholar Finalists:
[National Merit Scholarships - Office of Undergraduate Education - The University of Texas at Dallas](http://oue.utdallas.edu/aes/national-merit-scholarships/)
It’s close to a full ride.
The McDermott schoalrship is a full ride plus:
[url=<a href=“http://www.utdallas.edu/mcdermott/]The”>The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program - The University of Texas at Dallas]The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program - The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program - The University of Texas at Dallas/url

Anyone know if there is a list anywhere of colleges that offer a free application for students who are NMSFs?

Anyone know how much RPI typically gives NMSFs ?

mathmomvt: this is not specific to NMSF but might help you as a starting point to find free apps. Also common app has a chart somewhere that shows the fees with each college so you can see which are free apps.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/444532-list-colleges-free-apply.html</a></p>

If you have put down an email on the PSAT test and said you want to be contacted by schools, you normally start receiving these free apps once the application season starts.

RPI does not give scholarships based on NMF status, but I believe that they do give some pretty substantial merit scholarships based on a combination of academic factors. My DS’11 was offered was called a “Rensselaer Leadership Award” for “an outstanding record of academic and personal achievements, a strong commitment to excellence, and illustration of intellectual curiosity.” The amounts vary; my son was offered about 65% of the cost of tuition, which I believe was close the the maximum they offered that year.

^ Is the Leadership Award the same as the RPI Medal? My sons school does not participate in the medal program unfortunately. Congrats on your DSs offer!

No, you do not have to be a Rensselaer Medalist to be offered the Leadership award, and my son was not. Our school does participate in the program, but will only recommend someone for the RPI Medal if they make an ED-style agreement that if they are awareded the RPI Medal they will definitely go to RPI (since the school doesn’t want their one medalist slot wasted on someone who might not end up attending). My DS was nowhere near ready to make that kind of commitment during Junior year (when the medal is awarded). RPI Medal guarantees the recipient at least 20K/year of merit money, but you can get that much or more without the medal.

A note on Tulsa – Tulsa requires

An application and essay by 2/15

AND to be named the top choice school by 3/1

My son was seriously considering Tulsa, but to have to name than as a top choice before he would learn of decisions from all schools he is applying to is a turn-off.

It would definitely be useful to note schools which have an early “first choice naming” deadline. Very few of them do, but it’s good to know. Boston University also has a 3/1 requirement to be named as first choice.

One thing to keep in mind, Longhaul, is that you can change your first choice anytime up until 5/1. You can only be awarded one official NM scholarship, and there is a “risk” that if your son names Tulsa as his first choice and then changes his mind, he will already have been awarded the Tulsa NM scholarship and be ineligible for any other official NM scholarship. It’s unclear if he could then turn down that scholarship and become eligible for another. If Tulsa is a serious consideration, call the NM folks and ask them what would happen if your son named Tulsa his first choice, was awarded their scholarship, and then changed his mind about his first choice.

Keep in mind also that an official NM scholarship is at most 2K/year for 4 years. The big scholarships discussed in this thread are mostly an official 1K or 2K per year, plus an extra college-based scholarship for the additional amount. And nothing prevents the college from giving your son their college-based scholarship even if he did mess up the first-choice naming thing and become ineligible for them to give their official part to.

There’s a good thread on here about naming your first choice school, but IIRC it did not fully address the situation where a school has an early naming date for a competitive scholarship that you might or might not want, depending on where else you get in and what other scholarships you might be awarded. But the NM folks on the phone tend to be very helpful, so do call if your son is seriously interested in Tulsa.

Great job!!

Thanks

University of Vermont is still missing. I believe it meets the requirements for section 2 since it offers full tuition in-state. Also the way it stacks generally works out to more than half-tuition OOS, although that’s not all NMF-specific.

[Scholarships : Student Financial Services : University of Vermont](<a href=“Student Financial Services | Student Financial Services | The University of Vermont”>Student Financial Services | Student Financial Services | The University of Vermont)

For out-of-state students, NMFs are awarded 10K/year which stacks with the regular merit scholarships ranging from 2K - 11K/year (with most NMFs qualifying for the 11K).

For in-state students: full tuition; does not stack with any other awards.

Sorry, I am not trying to pick on U of Vermont - I read through the comments for changes, but I missed yours.

no slight inferred, just pointing it out for the next version
