NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

and regarding temple, if u do a search for their merit scholarships, u can find the info. they are offered through the admissions dept

Drexel does have a small amount of green space, but not a nice big field for playing frisbee or anything IIRC. My son who was adamant he did not want a city campus actually really liked it anyhow. Worth a visit, IMO. They have a fully-integrated co-op program where you attend for 5 years but do 24 months of paid work in that time frame. (RIT and Northeastern do as well.) As longhaul says, very easy to get into city center – the campus has a conveniently located subway stop. We left our car at the hotel in center city and took the subway over/back and that was painless.

Can anyone post an updated list please?

[Latest update, removed U of Florida and updated many links]

I believe Alabama now offers a $3500 stipend instead of the previous $1000

Bob…please update Bama’s award.

It now covers 5 years - 10 semesters (including grad school classes), plus it gives a 3500 per year stipend. A student could use one of those semesters for a summer abroad as well.

Knox College in Illinois gives $20,000/yr to NMFs, which is a bit over half tuition. And $15,000/yr to NMSF.
[Academic Scholarships | Knox College](http://www.knox.edu/admission-and-financial-aid/scholarships/academic-scholarships.html)

Thank you for the thread!

Keep in mind that merit scholarships go towards β€œneed” first, so sometimes the awards don’t reduce how much you’ll have to pay since the school replaces need based aid with merit.

To reduce the amount that you have to pay then the merit must be large enough to exceed need (cover all need) and then β€œcut into” family contribution.

This can be shocking to those who think a half tuition or similar will reduce their payment, but ends up just going towards need.

mom2collegekids: your post confused me. If it’s merit, it would regardless of family income, right? My D is very likely a NMF 14. We are not qualified for any need based aid. If she gets into an ivy, we’ll pay for it; if not, she will go to a full tuition/ride school and save the money for med or dental school.

This is a great thread! Thanks for everyone’s input, especially for bob wallace’s hard work!

mom2collegekids: your post confused me. If it’s merit, it would regardless of family income, right? My D is very likely a NMF 14. We are not qualified for any need based aid. If she gets into an ivy, we’ll pay for it; if not, she will go to a full tuition/ride school and save the money for med or dental school.

Sorry for the confusion. We don’t qualify for need aid either. My younger son did the same…took the big scholarship money at Bama and now he’s in med school and we’re paying for that.

Yes, if you don’t have β€œneed” then the merit award reduces what you pay. If you have need, then the award goes to β€œneed” first, and then if it’s big enough, it will reduce what you pay as well.

If I might elaborate a little more on M2CK’s observations:

Suppose your Suzy Achiever has applied to Old Bricks U. OBU might calculate the following for her financial aid:
----------------------------------------------------------
Annual Cost of Attending OBU… $30,000
Estimated Family Contribution… - $20,000 (based on income and assets)
… --------------
Total Calculated Need… = $10,000
----------------------------------------------------------
which, fortunately for you, the college agrees to meet with a package of grants and work-study (no loans!). In this scenario you end up paying $20,000 per year.

After admission, however, you get a letter in the mail saying Suzy’s hardwork has earned her a merit scholarship – $10,000 per year renewable for four years (usually if she maintains a certain level of academic performance). Great! Your bills have been cut in half, right?

Wrong. Since OBU is giving you an additional $10,000, they say you no longer need it. Hence:
----------------------------------------------------------
Annual Cost of Attending OBU… $30,000
Estimated Family Contribution… - $20,000 (based on income and assets)
Additional Income… - $10,000 (merit aid)
… --------------
Total Calculated Need… = $0
----------------------------------------------------------
And so you still end up paying $20,000 per year.

To elaborate further on what m2ck and descartez are saying about merit aid cutting into need-based aid, most schools that β€œmeet need” promise to meet unmet need, and if your β€œneed” (computed by them) is met by merit scholarships, then you don’t have any unmet need for them to fill with need-based aid.

Also Descartez’s first example, I would say that if the work-study is $2K and grants are $8K, the family is actually paying 22K – 20K up front, plus 2K from the work-study earnings.

If the student gets a 10K merit scholarship, the family only has to pay the 20K, and the student is no longer eligible for work-study, but is free to get a non-work-study job to earn 2K which they can contribute toward their expenses, so the family may only have to pay 18K up front and let the student cover the remaining 2K via their income.

(Note further that IF, as is fairly common, the school reduced self-help first when a merit scholarship is earned – particularly if it was an outside scholarship, the student could have essentially the same outcome with just a 2K merit scholarhip. Then they’d have 2K merit, 8K grants, no work study and be free to get a non-ws job.)

Thanks for all the detailed explanations! My D made the 2014 NMSF in an announcement made by the school principal. Total 8 NMSF in her school!

Congratulation DD of BSMD2014!

NEU dropped the amount of their scholarship?!? :frowning: When did that happen?

I was going to mention the UL-Lafayette scholarship, but I see it’s on the latest list. It should be noted that it is also available to semifinalists.

We went to a scholarship presentation and they said that for students with an ACT of 28+ who are admitted by November 15 they will do early notifications of scholarships (early December).

I would guess that an equivalent SAT would count for the 28 ACT for early notification. I am hoping so as my son’s ACT score is 27  His SAT is much better (over 1400 CR/M). He is retaking the ACT this weekend so if he pulls it up a bit he should be good to go either way.

Northeastern not only dropped the amount of their scholarship, but they also moved their notification date back to April 13 (that is, the date by which you need to name them your first choice school to be eligible for the NMF scholarship) – that’s a big deal because that’s just before our April break during which we will be doing final visits and making a final choice. :(
