NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

Thanks for the list! You rock!

I’m confused about Central Florida.

BobWallace’s list calls it a full-ride school. The pdf he links to, and the current pdf document for merit scholars, list the following benefits for NMFs:

*Guaranteed scholarship upon enrollment for finalists who designate UCF as their first choice by the deadline (approximately $68,000 Florida Residents, approximately $144,000 non-Florida Residents)

blah, blah

Guaranteed on-campus housing for four years with available housing preference (upon application)*

To me, β€œguaranteed housing” means, β€œWe’ll hold a room for you,” not β€œWe’ll pay for the room.”

I wrote for clarification, and the Director of The Scholars Program linked me to the current pdf that I copy/pasted above. So not much help.

Does anyone know for sure?

The UCF cost of attendance, including R&B, books, and everything is under $37K/year for OOS residents. [Student Financial Assistance, UCF](http://finaid.ucf.edu/applying/app_costs.html) The $144K over 4 years covers 36K/year, so that covers tuition, R&B, and more, making it definitely a β€œfull ride”

Blush. I guess I could have worked out the math myself. Thanks.

No problem, I find many of the scholarship descriptions confusing, which can make it easy to miss the β€œobvious”.

I probably mentioned this before, but will try again. U of Cincinnati does give awards to OOS. For instate it’s $17k/yr, which covers tuition/fees and room part of rm/bd at this point. Dollar amount does not go up year-over-year. For OOS it’s $20K/yr. OOS tuition/fees are $26K/yr. So it is a significant scholarship, more than half. The profs there are very aware of it. Last year the music prof. repeatedly advised my D to get app in by 12/1 so she would be eligible. It is limited to 60, but last year they enrolled under 40, so not really competitive at this point.
[Cincinnatus Scholarship, University of Cincinnati](<a href=β€œStudent Financial Aid - About UC | University of Cincinnati”>Student Financial Aid - About UC | University of Cincinnati)

It seems UIUC has some large awards, though they haven’t made it onto this list. They ARE for instate only. The scholarship is for full tuition, not fees. Fees are high there, $3424/yr, so it is worth noting. Limited to 30. It’s called Provost. The confusing thing is that on main scholarship page the Provost description doesn’t mention NMF, but I read lots of posts people talking about this full tuition scholarship for NMF and now I see that on the interior page about Provost it is so described. Since they had at least 70 NMF/NAF last year, though I don’t know how many were instate, I assume it is competitive. And then there are all the NMFs who didn’t enroll when they didn’t get it.
<a href=β€œOSFA – Scholarship Database”>OSFA – Scholarship Database;

Hi, I was just about to remove myself from this thread since S2 has decided not to take PSAT but I saw celesteroberts post about UIUC. NMF gets you $500/year at UIUC for 4 years- many of the other scholarships are based on need for Illinois residents with about 10 STAMPS scholarships based on grades/ecs/and some mystery criteria. Provost scholarship is not based on NMF status alone. They now get so many NMF applicants/acceptances that they no longer offer full tuition just for NMF. Sour grapes from me? Maybe but my S1 is having a great freshman year at UIUC engineering and has already spent his xtra 250 this semester on books for one class…

tootiredtocare, I saw also UIUC’s small $500 official NMF scholarship for instate. But the Provost info page says you must be NMF to be considered, and that it is limited in number. Are you saying that applicants who do not have NMF status receive the scholarship? Are you sure? Is the change recent?

Illinois was on the list at one time, but information provided on the thread was that the Provost scholarship is not based on NMF.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/14838634-post659.html</a></p>

Please be aware that the Fordham NM award is NOT automatic. Many students in our area (including my son) who were NM and had outstanding grades expected to receive this scholarship last year but did not. When we appealed, we were told that it was very competitive. The school counselors were horrified at this recent development.

Sorry Bob. The website is confusing since in one place it says NMFs only are considered for Provost, and on another page NMF is not mentioned. So either they are sloppy, changing the criteria for scholarship and not the Provost page, or it is still for NMFs only but they describe it badly on the general freshman scholarship page where it is listed with other awards.I guess I should call and check. Not instate for Illinois, but since I raised the topic I may do it to be sure. Will get back to you.

Bob, I got e-mail from UIUC. They say the Provost is no longer a NMF scholarship. The page that says it is has not been updated.

[Updated Fordham and Cincinnati, fixed some links]

Notes: In-state only

I believe the Full-Ride at University of New Mexico is for in-state only according to their website.

Bobkatevan, University of New Mexico has a scholarship also for non-residents called National Scholars. It says β€œNational Merit Finalist or National Achievement & National American Indian Scholar may be eligible.” It is the same wording they use for β€œResident Scholars.” β€œMay be eligible” leaves it up in the air, doesn’t it?

Liberty University offers a full tuition scholarship for Commended scholars. I believe it is automatic.

I think Bobkatvan is wondering about the β€œfull-ride” part. I am also confused. I think the problem is understanding if the OOS finalist gets the national scholar AND the Amigo scholar as a combined amount. I hope that’s the case. It leaves something like $12K for room and board, etc.

WasatchWriter, I sent them an email today asking for clarification on National Merit for OOS. I’ll post something as soon as I receive an answer.

I’m not sure why there is confusion. UNM National Scholars clearly states, β€œApproximately $16,800 plus the Amigo Scholarship …” The two awards together cover tuition, room, and board for OOS.

Thanks Bob, I didn’t scroll down enough on their page to see the out-of-state scholarships that include the Amigo award. From what I can tell a OOS full ride would run about $70K, so it they do indeed give both NMF and Amigo awards then it should cover everything. Thanks so much for maintaining the list!
