There are top flight schools that offer some great merit money. UofChicago, Johns Hopkins, Emory, Duke, Georgia Tech, Davidson, WakeForest, UVA, UNCChapel Hill, just to name a few have some hefty awards. But you have to be in the top echelons of the students going to those schools to get that money, just as you have to be in the top tiers of any school that offers merit money to get it. You find your level in the merit money world. There are schools that are not highly ranked that do not give much or any merit money as well, just as the ivies and some other top tier schools do not.

“So many scholarships have a minimum GPA of 2.0 that it’s almost laughable to consider them “scholarships” and not financial aid at that point.”

Any out west? A link would be nice…

^ IDK about specifics, there are a bunch of websites like Fastweb and all those types of sites. They are just random “anybody” scholarships, and it’s almost entirely need based.

Ohhh…fastweb…if you check the “guaranteed scholarship” thread ( merit, not need), the gpa tends to have to be 3.0, but usually closer to 3.5, regardless of SAT scores.

/rant

Yeah, I don’t know where I’ve seen the 2.0 number. I do know I’ve seen it before, since I thought it was ridiculous because < 2.0 is academic probation/dismissal at my school, so obviously everybody qualified for the scholarship, resulting in it being a lottery really.

Well check that thread. There are many scholarships there, based “solely on merit”.

Ooops. NVM.

"tons of merit aid at random tier-3 schools in neighboring states, but I didn’t want to go to such academically-poor schools. "

Well if you aren’t good enough to get the merit awards at the schools that you think you are good enough for you, and don’t think the schools that will give you merit awards are good enough for you, you have a problem. You have plenty of options; you just don’t want any club that is willing to sponsor you.

^ Actually Cpt, it’s "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member. " Groucho Marx

And perfectly appropriate here.

Thanks, Erin’s Dad. I know I had read or heard something of that sort and yes, these posters reminded me of it.
