@WeirdOne did u get any admission notification? i haven’t heard from them even now.
@crackingthesat , I received an email a couple of weeks ago. I’m an international transfer. Scholarship notification are sent separately, I do not know about mine yet.
P.S. I apologize to the topic starter for going off topic. I was going to post my initial comment to a different thread, not specified as NMFs, accidentally posted into the wrong tab. Sorry again and good luck with your studies!
Thanks for this thread - I’m still hoping for a UMN merit scholarship but now I’m worried it won’t be coming. I was admitted CSE in November - I’m OOS, 32 ACT (34 math), 4.26 GPA, top 10% lots of ECs. Also admitted UIUC and Purdue but UMN my first choice.
Has anyone received any additional scholarships lately? My chances aren’t looking good…
@mh3353 There may still be the $4k-$8k (over 4 yrs) NM scholarship (the $4k difference is need-based) since thatt seems more linked to declaring UMN #1 choice?
I’m a bit confused (what’s new?) whether getting the $2500 from NMSC eliminates you from consideration for this. I had thought before that they wouldn’t stack the $1-2k/yr on top but may do $1k/yr for the remaining 3 yrs. S finally decided on UMN 1-2 wks ago and changed that at NM, but the letter he got about the $2500 one-time scholarship still has school choice listed as “undecided”.
@MomMe32…The $2500 one-time will be the official NM scholarship your S receives. You should call the NM coordinator at UMinn and ask what the universities policy is towards NMFs who receive the $2500 award. Some schools will make up the $1500 difference (assuming the $1K/yr school sponsored award) over the last 3 years but some will not (Northwestern is one school that won’t). Congrats to your S on being awarded the $2500 scholarship. Hopefully UMinn will be a school that doesn’t want to see any NMFs lose out on any funding. [-O<
@Wolverine86 - Thanks. I did contact the NMF recruiter. She said a student w/ the one-time $2500 NMSC award, gets $1k/yr for remaining 3 yrs (4 yr total = $5500) vs UMN $1k/yr award (4 yr total = $4k). UMN also gives $2k/yr but the extra $1k/yr is based on need.
So I guess my son isn’t losing out on funding. I can’t complain - UMN has been pretty generous w/ him. 4 yrs at UMN will cost us 1/2 of one yr for my nephew at a private even if my son stays in dorms and meal plan all 4 yrs (doubt he will). Most importantly, I think he will get a great education at UMN. With AP & other credits, he could even get a masters degree on the 4 yr scholarship if he wishes (and he is organized enough to do so!). Even though I encouraged him to look around a bit beyond UMN when looking at colleges, The more I’ve dug in and looked at UMN, and its programs, the more I was sold on it for my son even w/o scholarships. Scholarships just sweetened the deal.
@MomMe32…That’s great news!! Going from what might’ve been a $1500 loss to having a $1500 gain does indeed sweeten the deal. $-)
Our D1 will graduate next month from CBS and she has loved her 4 years at UMinn. She is in the midst of her grad school interviews now, including UMinn, but for her program they tend to take most of their students from other undergrad schools. If they do offer her a slot though, one of her undergrad scholarships will continue to give her $5K/yr during grad school as well. She’s been able to participate in a research project, had a campus job fall into her lap, done tutoring for the last 2 years, and is working as a TA this year as well. She’s had a fantastic education and has wonderful opportunities, all of which will hopefully pan out into a grad school acceptance somewhere at the end of the month. [-O<
We’ve got nothing but good things to say about UMinn. Your son is making a great choice!! Go Gophers!!
Kind of late here, but I’ll still share! I am from Wisconsin, so I have reciprocity. NMF with 228 PSAT, 2210 SAT, 34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, ranked 1st out of 380-ish, 10 AP’s, JV XC and Track for three years, band for four years, a decent amount of volunteering, and have worked for our family business freshman through junior year and at a grocery store senior year. I am entering CBS and Honors, and I got the $10,000/yr Gold Scholarship, $2,500 from NMC and $1,000/yr for three years from the U. I also got a $1,700 research stipend, but I’m not really sure why. I’m really excited to be a part of the Class of 2019!
