NMH Details

I'm going to NMH next year and don't know a whole lot about the school. I know that there have been many threads regarding NMH but couldn't find one entirely on it. Could anyone please post details of NMH? Regarding academics and college matriculation compared to other competitive schools? eg. Andover, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Exeter etc. What major/minor differences are there that could set NMH apart from these other schools?

Thanks in advance.

I brought up the NMH prediction thread for you to read. I'm not sure if you had a chance to visit, but NMH is an incredible place with warm people and rigurous academics. Will you be a 9th grader?

Welcome to the NMH group! There are a number of kids attending NMH next year from this board -- my son, warriorboy's son, keylyme's son and hellosunshine are the ones that come to mind.

NMH seemed like the perfect fit for my son -- he didn't want a school that was stuffy, pretentious, preppy, or where wealth was a big part of the social scene. What he did want was strong academics, great sports and theater, a school that really cares about it's students, the environment and the world.

If you have specific questions, ask away -- keylyme has a son who will be attending NMH for the second year this fall, so she has real experience. Linda S, who also posts on this board quite a bit, lives very close to NMH -- so she can answer questions about the local area.

Yay NMH! I chose NMH for the reasons that most do.

It has a fantastic outdoor education program and a beautiful campus, which is something that I couldn't live without being from a clan of California hippies. :D

Another great thing about NMH is the impressive amount of alumni that are staff. It's great that they love their school enough that they don't want to leave, even as adults!

I would also stress, as other NMH proponents do, that the academics are just as rigorous as most other schools on this thread, but the atmosphere is benevolent, and not at all intimidating.

thanks to everyone!
warriorboy648, I will be a 9th grader next year

Also,do the majority of students have roomates or is it single rooms? or half for each..

freshman rooms are doubles (and a few triples I believe) at least that is what they told us.

The above posts are helpful. But they overlook an important detail. The school's athletic nickname is "The Hoggers."

....and Cushing is the Purple Penguins, Deerfield is the "doors", another (don't remember which) is the winged beavers. Your point would be?

The little pink pig riding on my dashboard (sporting his smile and sunglasses) is absolutely adorable!

I have a little NMH hogger on my desk...he's pretty cute.

oh, and does anyone know if we will have time to go shopping with our roommates when we get to school?

I think that the freshman leave campus in the afternoon on Thursday to go on their overnight trip... I assume you might have to wait to shop.

What is everyone doing for cash. The Bank of america debit card seems the most convenient.

It appears that kids don't buy their books in advance. I'm hoping they have lots of used copies at the bookstore. I also hope they have some of those big golf umbrellas. I've been surrounded by Loomis, Choate and Berkshire umbrellas. I need to let NMH be seen.

I am also wondering about what kids do about cash -- and how much they need access to. I think keylyme mentioned that they have a campus/nmh card that parents can put money on (like what Burb parent described in the money post).

Both my kids have a mastercard debit card from USAA -- they have had one since they were 12. Great when you need a major credit card to check into the airport (they frequently travel alone), all ATM fees are refunded no matter what ATM machine you use, online access 24/7, great customer service, etc. The accounts are linked to my accounts -- so I see their account info everytime I look at mine and I can transfer funds in and out, or see where the money is going. It has worked very well for us.

I have a debit card already, but I will just use my student card on campus.

Warriorboy- My grandparents bought me a NMH umbrella as a gift, the note said "You poor California child...you're in for a shock!"

hellosunshine - I think you will be in for a shock, but you might love the snow. It's great to sit by your window and watch the snow fall.

Avon Old Farms are the Winged Beavers (pronounced Wing-ed Beavers)

Cushing is Penguins, not Purple Penguins.

Deerfield prefers Big Green.

Other then the usual Tiger and Bear, some of the other better ones are:
Westminster Martlets (a mythical footless bird)
Salisbury Crimson Knights (sometimes the Crimson Knights of the Housatonic, a reference to the USMA Black Knights of the Hudson)
Choate Wild Boars
Pomfret Griffins
Loomis Pelicans
St George's Dragons (get it?)
Gunnery Highlanders

Yeah, I knew they weren't technically the "Purple" Penguins, but their color is purple and it entertains me to call them that.

Does NMH have as good Matriculation and test scores compared to schools like Choate, Loomis, or Hotchkiss?

Yes they do.

Really? Do you have any stats to back that up? I'm just wondering since I might apply late. I haven't heard too much about it yet.

You can go to NMH's website to see their college matriculation. From what I remember there were students from NMH going to all the top schools.
