NMH Details

What is NMH’s acceptance rate? I am deciding what schools to go to and my “reach schools” are Exeter and Andover, Choate, and Hotchkiss (a lot, I know) and I want to know if NMH is another reach school or more reasonable. My safety school, though I was told that when asking for financial aid no school is “safe”, is Loomis Chaffee. Is this incorrect? !!
Oh, and mostly I just want NMH information. But the other stuff kind of explains it.

I’ll bump the best NMH thread for you. It’s called “NMH Prediction” it will definitely help you find more out about the school.

Thank you. :D

saer – you are correct, if you need fa your safety school will be your local school.

My applied in the last admission round and he needed significant FA. He applied to 9 schools, was admitted to 7 and the FA was doable at 4 of the 7 he was admitted to.

You need to really do your research and apply to a ton of schools if you need lots of FA. We found that the further away the school was, the more FA he was offered – so think of looking a bit further from your location. You might even check out Thacher and Cate and Fountain Valley – 3 excellent schools that would love to add some kids from somewhere other than the west.

Make sure you are a good fit for the school – absolutely do not pick a school because it is well-known, get past that.

We found several schools that would have been a good fit for my son, but he didn’t apply because the % of kids on FA was low and the average grant was low – sure indicators that unless he was a recruited athlete, he wouldn’t get the money to attend.

I would not say that NMH is a safety for anyone needing FA – we had several posters who were admitted this past admission season, but were not given the FA to attend.

I can’t apply to anywhere other than NE and NY, because of time and my mother wanting me to come home (and not spend a fortune driving or flying :frowning: ). So all West, Southern, and MidWest schools are most definitely out. Also, a lot of schools that would offer more financial aid are too small for my own preferences (under 400 kids) because I want a large environment. So many schools are out because of that. I have 8 schools to apply to so far, and now that I’ve heard so much from this forum, I’ve dumped the “prestige is important” mindset. But the schools I want to go to are prestigious, but that’s not why I want to go.

nothing wrong with wanting to apply to a prestigious school – as long as that is not the reason you are applying there.

as far as location – does your mother want you coming home alot, or just for breaks? Just wondering – since there are several schools that will pay for your plane fare to go home, the cost isn’t a factor (what is a factor is the cost to visit for parent’s weekend).

I would be happy to talk about the financial aspects of BS with you mom if she wants – let her know that we were in a similiar position last year and it worked out very well for us, my son will be starting at NMH this fall.

My mom wants me home for breaks, and we live about 500-600 miles from most schools in New England. That is a lot of money by car, but about the same for a plane. If I talk to my mom about talking to you, and she’s okay with it (the research is rather one sided at the moment- I find what I want and present it to her, for approval. And then we work together on a school.) then that’d be amazing.

just let me know and I will call her or send her my phone number. Just send me a private message with the info.

I had similiar concerns – and my son will be attending school in Massachusetts and we live in Colorado – so I know it can work.

Thanks so much. I’ll get back to you by tonight, hopefully.

bumping this for all the students accepted to NMH.

Just a thank you to all the NMH students, parents, and applicants that have posted to NMH threads over the past 18 months. My son applied for this year to be a sophomore next year and was accepted with adequate FA to allow him to attend. The admissions staff, faculty and administrators at NMH were exceptional throughout this process. We can to understand the unique positioning of NMH in the boarding school universe and the very special opportunities that it can offer students as they grow and become adults. Your thoughts, comments, and observations regarding your application experiences (both at NMH and other schools) and your lives at NMH helped us understand that this school was really the right fit for him. Thanks once again.

Hi, I just got my SSAT scores today, and in the average percentile for my grade it says 37% can anyone please tell me what that means and what section of the results do admission officers look at, because I am beginning to get nervous that it will affect my chances into getting into boarding school greatly.?
