NMS cutoff predictions for class of 2018

I’m a tiny bit concerned about GA. D18 hasn’t heard anything from her HS yet. She has an SI well above Art’s projected range of 218-221.

So sad to read this.
I was hoping against hope that the cut off SI did not increase in OR.
Thank you for sharing.

@droppedit I was feeling the same way earlier today. But I think some schools may have a policy in how they reveal NMSF. My child is at a private school with a very hands on GC and even his classmate with a 223 (a sure thing in TN) hasn’t heard anything. So I think they might be keeping it under wraps and may surprise the kids after a little planning. Not sure, but that’s my gut feeling. I could’ve emailed the GC but didn’t feel like I wanted to put him in an awkward position of either lying and claiming ignorance or telling me something he wasn’t ready to tell me. So I am maniacally checking online instead. LOL.

@droppedit was GA a 219 last year, like Oregon? Oregon above 221 was a shock.

@khmermom very sorry the news wasn’t what you wanted to hear.

@LOUKYDAD – yes, GA was 219 last year, according to Art’s table. We assumed that D18’s 223 would get her to NMSF. Her HS pushed to increase the number of NMSF kids last year (they had 17-19 in 2017) so I thought they would be happy to let kids know ASAP if they made NMSF.

@contdes – I’m not going to bug the GC at D18’s large public HS (700 seniors), either. They have a ton of other work to do, with college apps, transcripts, etc.

@droppedit with NJ at 223, Art is saying MA is the only state capable of matching 223, and that MA is unlikely to exceed NJ. If I am interpreting him correctly GA at 224 wouldn’t be within the realm of possibility as far as he is concerned. Trust Art I say! That has helped me get through this crazy long wait.

He has looked pretty much dead on with his predictions so far up until OR. A 3 point rise this year is a major jump for a state that was already at 219 last year. Seems like an outlier to the other states where reports are in.

Ohhhhhh @HeliMom74 ;

A mom from OK reported on Art’s blog that a 216 is safe. Looks like both of our kids are in! <:-P

Not buying the OR cutoff. There may have been a misunderstanding.

I am also hoping that the OR cutoff is lower than 221, but given that Washington’s above 221, isn’t it plausible for Oregon?

Anyone knows or receives letter about Texas NMS cutoff for class of 2018 ?

@user000 Texas is <=220 I believe

Art now says OK = 216
Last year was 213. Art’s prediction was 215.

Congrats @ShrimpBurrito!!!

I did some asking around re: The Book from out of state acquaintances who have connections to GCs. A few said they can only see the names of the students in their own schools.

Do you think maybe The Book comes out after the press release? Or, perhaps The Book is sent only to the principal?

I know a cc poster was there when a book arrived this week but we aren’t sure what that was, correct? And another cc friend was given The Book a few years ago, but it was after the press release.

Lastly, I checked with a contact at a college and the college contact said he won’t have the names until after the press release.

That’s my update, but I’m still hoping someone can have access to this mysterious book. C’mon, Jimmie!

@33ibbound, Art’s page says MI is > 217. Let’s hope @michigandad93 will hear something today

ooops, disregard

@ShrimpBurrito THANK YOU for this update! What lovely news to see first thing this morning.

My happiness is tempered by gratitude for the Oklahoma poster who updated even though her daughter missed by ONE STINKING POINT.

It’s also tempered by frustration of how numbers, numbers, numbers rule our kids right now.

This particular number will be a financial windfall for my boy’s college planning, and I (and my wallet) am hugely grateful, but I also know absolutely there are thousands of super and super-smart kids whom this test and these numbers did not accurately represent. It’s a strange and mixed bag of emotions.

Hugs, hugs to the mamas and daddies and kiddos who need them today. One day, in the not-so-distant future, when you kids are all in a field you love, you might have a passing thought about the nutty NMSF period and then think, “Eh, I am doing just fine.” And it will be absolutely true.

Re NMF regional distribution, it can’t be as rigid as the NMSF distribution. NMSF is based entirely on PSAT scores and graduating senior population so it’s easy enough for NMSC to distribute NMSF evenly according to population. But after that NMSC can’t control the location of students who don’t bother to complete the NMF application, or who have disciplinary issues such that the school can’t support them, or who had “fluke” PSAT scores but are C/D average students, or can’t achieve a confirming SAT. With only ~1000 students to trim, surely hundreds are out of NMSC’s control for the above reasons. The number of NMF isn’t a hard-and-fast exact 15k though, so I imagine there’s wiggle room each year to accommodate the qualifications of the students and try to balance the NMF distribution.

AZ <= 221, according to letter mailed to school.

Son was called into GC in New Mexico and told he was a semi-finalist. He had a 215 SI.
