@shelleee SAT without essay is fine
Art has TN<=219 and I realized my neighbor works for the local school board. So I called her and she said at least one local school has reported a 219 as an NMSF in TN.
Here’s my take. I wouldn’t leave it to hope. We just don’t know if a 210 is good enough, and that’s not a chance I would take if the opportunity for additional testing exists. Certainly a “YMMV” thing, but it to me the unknowns of the confirming score are just too much at this point, anecdotes or not…
For MI, 216 was predicted and 217 didn’t make it?
I’m sure this has been asked 1 million times, but how do we calculate our index for the SAT confirming score so that I can be sure that I can become a finalist? For reference, I have a 1500 on the SAT (770 math, 730 EBRW). Also, how do we know this confirming score? You guys are much more knowledgeable on this topic than I am
My Son had a PSAT 1480 with a 221 in MS. His ACT was a 34. The only SAT score he has was a sophomore 1410 with an SI of 209. I told him no way risk it. He took the SAT last Saturday and said it was easy so I am psyched. I wouldn’t risk it if my S or D had the skills to improve which most if not all NMSF do.
@mimisdad last year MI cutoff was 216, predicted for this year was 217, but looks like latest is 217 did not make it
@shellee SAT w/o essay. That’s what my D did last year. in the past under the old test they’d have to use jut the MC portion of the writing to remove the effects of the essay from the qualifying score. The new test allows you to skip the essay and it’s a separate score anyway (I think). In any case, that’s much easier for NMSC because they’ve never factored in the essay to begin with.
Can’t believe we haven’t seen a SI from MA yet. Headed to the headmasters house for a glass of wine. Gonna overstep the protocol line and try to twist his arm to get info on our kid. The school tends to be reluctant to share info. Boarding school problems!
@theedog: Drop the zero’s and add 2EBRW + Math. So: 732 + 770 = 223. All clear - by a wide margin.
@LOUKYDAD Thanks for doing that. I was just confused because of the scale difference in the psat and sat.
I would also not leave the SAT confirming score to hope. If it were my kid sitting below 211 I’d be getting him signed up for the October SAT and having him hit Khan Academy and the test prep books hard. But then my kid definitely wants to attend a school with a nearly full ride NMF scholarship, so there’s strong motivation there. For a student who isn’t currently interested in the big NMF scholarship schools I can see why there would be hesitation on retaking the SAT, but if the rest of the student’s application is strong and there’s any chance the student might like to take advantage of an NMF scholarship it seems wiser just to take that SAT again as soon as possible.
Edit to add: if you call NMSC after the September 13 press release date and they tell you that your kid’s SAT is definitely ok, you can cancel the October SAT and not much is lost except a bit of test prep time.
@LOUKYDAD, Aren’t real SAT scores out of 800 in each section (as opposed to 760 in PSAT)? 1500 in PSAT (730/770) will be 223 on PSAT (out of 228 MAX) but the same score in SAT will be 223 out of 240 MAX. May be I am being paranoid here. Stated otherwise, 211 out of 228 will translate to 222+ out of 240.
@TexanIndian the confirming SAT SI is never higher than the Commended SI. It’s not done by percentage of total possible points, just straight SI.
It’s not my day; I had to look that one up as well !!!
@TexasIndian - CollegeBoard shifts the SAT curve to the right, to account for the potential of additional progression in your college prep curriculum. That’s why each section is out of 800, not 760. However NMSC doesn’t tend to worry about that because they are merely trying to confirm your PSAT score. As a result, they tend to set the confirming score around the lowest cut-off (ie the commended number). They don’t have separate confirming scores for every state, even if cut-offs are very different.
This year’s confirming score hasn’t been released yet, and it may never be (similar to last year). However, you can call (after the press release date) and ask about your SAT score and they’ll let you know if OK. There are no restrictions on how many times you can take the SAT - just submit the one that is over 211.
In FL, if you are a NMF, you can get a full ride to many if not all of the FL state schools. It’s called the Benaquisto Scholarship. Not just free tuition, but free ride. Many go to UF for engineering. Sweet deal!
In Late May, the State government was passing a bill to open it up to all NMF. It failed at the last minute due to politics. I was wondering if anyone knew if it would pass by the spring. ( Benaquisto)
Do you have to be a FL resident?
