NMSC is so unfair!!!

Okay, so I am going to Kalamazoo, right? And they offer a $1000-$2000 National Merit Scholarship. I am a National Merit Finalist. I actually end up winning the one time $2500 dollar scholarship. Now, according to Kalamazoo College, I can longer get their scholarship, by NMSC's rules. So I went from $4000-$8000 to $2500 because I won something. What? Does this not make any sense at all, or is it just me? Is there anything I can/should do? GRRRHHHH, I am so mad!

Sometimes the college will give the scholarship for years 2, 3, and 4. Ask Kalamazoo about it.

Can you not accept the $2.5k and take the university offer? I think you have a choice.

With just a quick glance at the Kalamazoo financial aid web page, the college’s offer of $1000 to $2000 per year is need based. In that case, they will, of course, deduct the NMSC scholarship of $2500 for your first year. This is simply how need based FA is administered.

Well, the $1000 is not need based, it is the extra $1000 (for a total of $2000) that is need based. Here is what they told me, prior to posting here.

“Having been selected to receive a National Merit scholarship meant that we were unable to select you as a Kalamazoo College National Merit scholar. Had we been able to select you we would have offered you $1000 per year for the four years for a total of $4000. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you with a National Merit scholarship as a sophomore to replace the one time award. National Merit has very strict rules about awarding these scholarships, you can address any concerns about this matter to the National Merit Corporation.”

I hope that clears things up.

What many schools have done is to award the student who accepted the $2500 NMS scholarship their normal NM scholarship in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year. In this case, Kalamazoo shall just give you $1000 for your last three years of attendance. National Merit Corporation will not restrict them to do that.

That is what I thought they would do but they say otherwise. I will have to talk to them about it.

We experienced the same issue. From our experience . . . one college was willing to give another scholarship year 2, 3, and 4, the other one was not.

There was another posting a while back where a mom spoke with an individual at NM corporation - they told her that most schools did give additional $ years 2, 3, and 4.

Well, I already sent the deposit so I suppose that I am out of luck.
