Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows the details of UF's NM scholarships? The site doesn't give them. I found this article from four years ago about UF's reducing the packages (State: UF to slash merit scholar inducements) but that's it and I wasn't sure if the details given applied to the new package or the old on.

If anyone can tell me, that would be great. I literally just started considering UF today (I live in Alabama), but it seems like a pretty good option.

The national merit scholarship from UF these days sucks. It’s 1000 a year plus 1000 for “research”. So $5000 total. There’s some other benefits (guarenteed housing, priority registration) but the money isn’t very good.

You have to take 15 credits every semester as well.

I’m actually an incoming freshman with an OOS NMF scholarship, so I’ll try to fill you and any other lurkers in. I just went through this myself, lol, and I’ve done tons of research. The waiver is currently estimated at $ 20,140.00, although it is supposed to increase as tuition does. The actual “scholarship” is for $4,000 per year, with another 1k available for research (I was initially told it also covered career development, but nothing I’ve gotten since mentions that).

It’s a fairly good deal, although it’s not as good as it might seem right now, and definitely not as good as it used to be. Tuition has been rising at 15% the last few years (estimated in-state tuition is ~$5,000 for 2010) and is likely to continue. Plus, you’ll still be responsible for OOS fees. When I spoke with the NMF coordinator, she told me that an OOS student was responsible for about ~1k+ last year for tuition and fees after it was all said and done. Obviously, it’s still a fantastic deal compared to most schools, but there are a lot of other NMF scholarships that are substantially better (albeit at lower ranked schools).

Edit: Sorry, I just did a little post stalking of you and noticed that you’ll also qualify for NAF? That changes things quite a bit. UF’s NAF scholarship will give you an additional 17k on top of what I was previously talking about. I personally would jump on that in a heartbeat if tuition is a strong consideration for you. Congrats, you’ve got it made.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Like I said, I just went through this whole process myself.

^ To add onto Biply’s post, there’s a $5000 scholarship (or somewhere around that figure) from the honors program that you get as well (just for being a NAF) which brings the total to about $22k.
