Hello:

I wanted some feedback from experienced CCers and parents. My son scored a 236 on his PSAT and a 2330 on his first attempt at SAT. He is a junior in Texas. I believe this would qualify him for NMSF status. My questions:

(1) Should he retake the SAT? When?

(2) What would he need to move from NMSF status to NMF status?

(3) Is being a NMF good enough to obtain financial support?

(4) Is it true that some colleges offer a free ride for NMF?

Would appreciate your feedback!

Thanks!

No, he should not. 2330 is a great score for any college.

He needs to have a SAT score that ‘confirms’ the PSAT score (his does), he needs to have good grades (A’s and B’s), not have a bad disciplinary record, and not blow off the essay he’ll have to write for the Finalist app next year.

3+4. Some colleges offer financial support for NMFs, and yes, some do offer full rides. Here’s a list of all the schools that offer significant scholarships:

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback! That really helps!
