Kiddo is starting registration for CSS/Profile, and in searching for her schools on their list, saw that National Merit is on the list as a Particiating Institution and Program. Firstly -- do the NMSF need to send Profile information to National Merit? I thought those awards stood separately from financial need. Do all NMSF need to complete Profile and send it to National Merit? Didn't see anything in the packet from National Merit...what's up with this?

What is CSS? National Merit is completely independent - they do not take profiles from other organizations, but base decisions on the packet sent to them.

CSS/Profile is, as I understand it, another tool that some schools require for financial aid (like FAFSA). It’s run by College Board (hmmm…same as PSAT). Didin’t know if adding that to the list of institutions would help kiddo or not. This is how College Board defines it:

CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE® is the financial aid application service of the College Board. More than 600 colleges, universities, graduate and professional schools, and scholarship programs use the information collected on the PROFILE to determine eligibility for nonfederal student aid funds. The PROFILE is a fully Web-based application system that provides students a secure and efficient method for reporting their financial data to higher education institutions.

NMSF do not have to submit a CSS Profile.

that reference may be related to CSS schools that want to know if a NMCorp scholarship gets awarded.

What I find odd is that it’s listed (good old code 0085) as one you can add, along w/the universities, to send CSS information to…since this is a Merit award, I can’t really see any benefit to doing so…maybe I’ll ask when I call them (AGAIN) to see if her school has gotten around to sending the stuff (when I spoke to guidance this morning, the report was “by lunchtime…I’ll call you”…well, no call yet from GC…but enough personal hijack…)

I have heard some corporate scholarships are awarded on a sliding range, based on need. Perhaps for those few students, they want to see Profile information. You do not need to send your profile information to NMSC unless specifically asked.

probably it’s the same list of institutions they use for people to submit test scores to. It makes sense for them to have only one list.

NMSF do not need profile for National Merit

*I have heard some corporate scholarships are awarded on a sliding range, based on need. Perhaps for those few students, they want to see Profile *

That is possible.

But, for most of NMSF, they don’t submit CSS Profile

I did say it was only for a few students and they should only submit it if asked.
