<p>I got my letter of commendation yesterday, and semifinalist stuff came out at least 2 weeks ago. The semifinalist stuff was due back the end of last week I believe. Basically, if you get a commendation certificate, you are not a semifinalist.</p>
<p>If you got a letter of commendation, that's what you got. If you were a semifinalist, you got notified of that. Semifinalists don't get letters of commendation. And I know some people who are semifinalists this year, that information has been released to the press (and is released to the schools and students about a month before that).</p>
<p>Commended students also get certificates. Some schools wait to give those at the end of the year awards ceremony. Whether or not you've gotten the letter or certificate, if you got the letter this spring saying that you were in the top 50,000, but didn't make your state's cutoff for semifinalist, you're commended, and can add that honor to your applications.</p>
<p>Does being commended give you any financial/merit aid things?</p>
<p>Not through NMSC. But some colleges offer scholarships for the Commended.</p>

<p>mallomar....semifinalist cutoffs are by state, commended cutoff is national...one number. wanting to know if any one has heard officially yet on the commended # (state by state semifinalist cutoffs are now out), wondering if it has crept up from last year or not.</p>

<p>I called this number(1-847-866-5161) couple of days ago. They told me that 203 and above is the National Merit Commended for the entire USA.</p>
<p>i threw teh letter of commendation away. i am sort of ashamed.</p>
