Would the adcoms frown on my application if I added an additional essay. It's really short and I feel it will add another perspective to my application.

You will be demonstrating that you cannot follow instructions

I have to confess that I’m a huge sybbie fan.

My son asked the Dartmouth admissions office about submitting an additional writing sample. They encouraged him to submit it as a “Creative Writing Supplement.” He did this. He also submitted a music supplement. He was accepted yesterday ED, so I guess no one thought he couldn’t follow directions.

To Successman:
My son uploaded an additional essay in the “Upload Additional Info” section of the Common Application. He labeled it “Creative Writing Supplement.” Like I said above, he got good news yesterday in the ED pool. The admissions rep had recommended that if he did this, he shouldn’t also upload an activities resume (which he had planned to do for his other colleges.) I think that since Dartmouth doesn’t ask for additional essays, if you are an excellent writer, then go for it. Only submit it if it’s excellent writing and not just another essay to introduce yourself. Duke Shama (now budding Dartmouth Shama!)
PS I wish you lots of success, man.

Duke(Dartmouth)shama,

Congrats to your son, may he have a wonderful 4 years in Hanover.

The school will specifically review supplements for arts, music, film, theater & dance. Apparently, your son has an interest in creative writing and wanted to showcase his talent (and perhaps even had recommendation letters to attest to this).

However, it still does not negate the fact that many (I would even say most students) who are accepted outside of the departments that look at supplemental information manage to do so without sending additional information. Perhaps, it is just me being a fan of KISS.

Dartmouth states the following regarding supplemental material

@DukeShama: nice pun

Hi Sybbie,

Thanks for the congratulations. We are soooo happy for our son. They must be serving something funny at Dartmouth, because it seems that everyone who touches it loves it. We’re so thrilled our son will have this experience.

Regarding supplemental material… I just don’t know. The schools discourage it on the surface because I’m sure they are overwhelmed with information, but I know several Ivy accepted students who all added an extra essay…not just to Dartmouth-- Yale too.

I’m just glad we don’t have to analyze it anymore. Thanks for all your insightful posts. We’ve been silently reading your stuff throughout the admissions season.

Congrats to DartmouthShama . . . SWEET!
