No Air Conditioning at Duke? What!

I've heard pretty often that Duke has no air conditioning. Is this true and will it be a problem b/c I know that it gets pretty hot in Durham?

I think this is only on east campus...which is where freshman room... so I guess it would only be a problem for a year?

But Duke should be really rich. Why can't they just install some AC?

Because sweatin' it out in the Piedmont is a rich life experience! ;)

No, really. Where are you from? If the South, no sweat (sorry the pun) - you're already acclimated!

If not...you might want to bring a fan.

when i took a tour there, they specifically told us we were not allowed to bring our own window units. fyi.

There are some air-conditioned dorms, but it probably isn't a big problem without AC in the others or else they would have installed AC everywhere by now. I was a student there years ago, and as I recall, it is only August and May that it is warm, and the rest of the months weren't that bad without AC.

Bell Tower, Blackwell, and Randolph are air conditioned. I'm on the main quad, so I don't have air conditioning, but it's really not that bad. A couple big fans keep the room cool. Fans are also useful to drown out noise when you're trying to sleep. There's an air-conditioned study room in each dorm if you get too hot. :)

You're allowed to have a window air conditioner if you have severe allergies or a similar medical condition.

It's not too difficult to get a window AC...but it's also not too bad to NOT have AC, because it's only a few weeks out of the year that it's really actually "hot." Just plan on not sleeping without blankets for a few weeks...and if you loft your bed all the way to the ceiling...get a clip on fan...because without it could be unbearable. I have a window AC, but there have been nights we cut it off and I was not a happy person in the morning...

Yeah, you could always claim you have some kind of obscure heat allergy if you really want one.

They do ask for a doctor's note, which has to have some proof or something...fyi...

After staying at Duke for 3 weeks for the TIP program I can honestly say that during the dog days of summer in Durham aren't the bad. You will have gigantic fans spinning at all times in your room. You'll only be in your room for a little bit of the time, mostly just to sleep, and you can sleep nearly naked. Every other building on East Campus has AC and so do the common rooms in the dorms. Also, it does get cold in NC and fall sets in around October and there is no need for AC then.
