How bad are the dorms with no air?
I heard that foster house for men only is really a bad dorm.... is that true?
Does anyone ever put air conditioners in their rooms even though they say not to?

the "air conditioners" that people put in their dorms are fans...and no, those are not illegal.

i'm an incoming freshman and would imagine we're not going to be needing an air conditioning unit...yes, dorm halls tend to get stuffy, but just open a window to get that lake michigan wind.

The only time that the dorms were really hot were move-in day and the last week of school, when it was 85 degrees and 95% humidity - that was pretty rough. Otherwise, you really don't need the air conditioning.
PS - 1835 Hinman has air conditioning, I believe.

hehe...i think i can handle that.. I have no air con at my house anyways in so. Cal... fan only. (old house). It's the winter im more fearful of..

m3ssi - My son's friends from Nevada & SoCal were always cold for the first brisk days of fall, but they managed just fine. Your body just has to acclimate itself.

Yes Glamourbaby, 1835 Hinman (where I lived my sophomore year) had air conditioning. Woooooo~~~~

Too bad I won't be living there this year. =(
It can get quite humid in June.

California = No Humidity; Chicago = Humidity

You will suffocate in the dorms when the weather gets warmer.

Ha.. I Lived in The Plex... we had air, but it was turned off in like October and didn't come back until a week before school ended, lol.... what a rip off

does allison have ac?

Don't think so.

mmm. exciting. =) at least i won't be at NU for summer school or something like that.

Bring A Fan.

No air conditioning is pretty bad the first three weeks or so, but after that it's really not a problem. A fan should be enough to allow you to survive. It's pretty much cold all school year so I wouldn't worry about it. Litterally, it was 40 degrees at the end of May. Don't worry about being warm enough in the dorms either. The heaters work pretty well. A lot of times I was actually too hot. Especially with my down comforter. In terms of being prepared for the weather, just make sure you've got a couple things you can wear the first weeks of school when it is hot and a really warm coat and hat and gloves for when it is cold. That's about it.

The schools have heat. You probably won't be in your dorm room to experience much of the hot, humid Midwest summer. A fan should be enough to cut it through the end of May. Get beyond that and you're going to want air conditioning very badly.

Unfortunately, I was at NU for 6 weeks this summer in the transfer dorm...I almost died. No AC. it was always hot, I was always sweating. Hopefully it won't be too bad in september. Anything is better than june and july weather in evanston. One more thing, I went to preview nu and it was wayyyy too hot in my host's room. She had to always leave her window open. They really need to work on efficiency.

I just know that the older dorms usually do not have modern A/C units. I lived in a newer dorm my sophomore that had an A/C unit. Woooo!
