No airconditioning...

I was accepted into Penn State for summer but recently found out that they have no air conditioning. I’m not trying to sound high maintenance but I’m not sure if I can do it. I love Penn State and really want to go there but I honestly can’t sleep if I’m too hot and I’m worried if I’m in a dorm without AC I won’t sleep and then will get horrible grades. I need help and advice!

It wouldn’t keep me from doing what I wanted, but I’m not you.

Only you can determine how important it is to you.

@scohen99, here is a quick thread regarding this issue.

Bring a couple fans.

I think my son thought he was going to die without AC. Now that he has had a chance to experience living in the dorms during the warm months. He said it’s not bad at all. The fans work well.

My son has done the summer camps at Penn State for several years. He is always in East for a couple of weeks in the middle of July. We have brought a fan to be put in the window and another fan that stands on the desk. The cross breeze worked just fine and he didn’t have any issues. My daughter is going this summer for LEAP and we will do the two fan thing again. It’s only 6 weeks. Don’t let it deter you from your overall plans!

@PERplexD My son went through the same “no AC” transition. One large and one small (read cheapo) clip-on fan are still going strong after three years. He also uses a fan to dry his towel. I don’t think he actually washes the towel, but he does dry it. I don’t ask.

I really think you’ll be okay scohen99.

I stayed at Penn State one very humid summer - at a frat that rented out rooms, in a room that was in the middle of the house, with one small window and no cross breeze. I love air conditioning, but we did fine with fans. The dorms have to be better than that. I don’t think it will be as bad as you think. And if you really want to go to PSU, six weeks with a fan isn’t a deal-breaker (unless you have allergies that open windows/no air conditioning would make much worse.)

There are some dorm rooms with air conditioning…very few.
