No AP classes senior year?

Would that affect my chances for top 20 schools?
Let's just say I have enough grades and test scores for those schools but my school offers limited AP/honors classes.
My school only offers AP Bio 11th grade, I took it.
They are offering AP Stat and AP Lit along with Honors Chem (no conflicts) and Honors English (conflict)
Either I take both APs, miss out on Calc
Or take Calc and Eng honors along with Chem honors?

I want to take Physics outside of school (my school don't offer them)
But I can't take Calc and Physics outside...

I MIGHT
be able to take regular English, Calculus and AP Stats…
I really wanna drop AP Lit because I’ll have Senior Project and a lot of writing to do for college…but I don’t want to have no AP class…

@ThePariah Does taking Calc conflict with taking at least one AP course because you said that if you take two you miss out, so would one cause the same problem?

IMO as long as your senior year schedule is still relatively full of difficult classes and the school you are applying to can see that you applied yourself and did relatively well in the classes you were able to take, then it won’t deter you. Isn’t Calc an AP course at your school?

I personally decided not to take AP Language my senior year (because we can only have 6 Honors or AP classes on our schedule and not 7) and we don’t have Honors English 12, so I’ll be in regular English. For me it was either take both AP Physics C classes or my least favorite subject. But if you actually enjoy English, then I think you should take the course. But how do you know if it would cause a scheduling conflict? Does your school already have the class periods set in stone and tell you.

Yeah AP Stats conflict with English Honors and English regular is full…but maybe if I ask again through email?
I heard that AP Lit has a lot of writing, reading and essays (from the teacher himself and other threads online). I have to study for SAT, go to physics class at local CC and write college essays AND do the senior capstone project (my teacher said if I take regular English I’ll have time in class to work on the Capstone project, not the case with AP Lit and less time if I take Eng Honors).

I really don’t wanna take AP Lit (I like the class and reading but it’s time consuming at a HORRIBLE TIME) and AP Stat…maybe because I heard it’s too easy
If I don’t take those 2 AP classes, I would have almost the exact same schedule as other kids in my class because my school offers little but I am taking Physics outside so that looks good. Also if I take those 2 AP classes, I would have AP Bio (11th grade), AP Lit and AP Stat under my belt, which is English, Math and Science…

Really comes down to…AP Stat or English Honors…But I might have to take English Honors since Regular English is full

There are several AP courses that colleges value more than others. At the very top of the list would be the holy grail of AP Calc BC . . . . and towards the bottom would be AP Stat. (Many Admissions Directors refer to AP Stat as “AP Lite.”) So, I would take English Honors, especially as most selective colleges want students to take English every year of high school.

FWIW: A good way to judge how a college values an AP course is to look at the credits, or advanced placement, they give for those AP courses once admitted. Take Yale, for example. http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/table-acceleration-credit

Yale gives NO credit whatsoever for AP Stat (even if you score a 5 on the exam), while you do get Acceleration credit for AP English Lit if you score a 5 and AP Calc if you score a 4 or 5.

Which class should I take?
I asked something else in the other thread.

For YSP, take what interests you. For senior schedule, take English Honors and Calc.

So it’s okay if I don’t take an AP class? People in my class will take both APs and they are applying for Penn too =/

At the end of the day you should do whatever is best for you, NOT what everyone else is doing. IMO you should definitely take calculus regardless.

Right, I was gonna take Calculus outside of school, but I just cannot do that if I also want to take Physics outside.
If I take Calculus in school, then I don’t know what class to take at Penn, but I want to apply.

Why are you taking a class at Penn? Take Calculus in school and then take physics outside of school. But if you really want to take a class at Penn that pick a course that interests you.

Yea ;D
So let me ask this one last time, would colleges question why I did not take any AP courses when they were offered despite the schedule conflicts? Do I have to explain it to them?

Yes, they would need that explanation. If you aren’t challenging yourself, your guidance counselor will not be able to say that you took the most demanding schedule.

Well I am but what do you mean my guidance counselor will not be able to?
Should I still go this route then?

Hello?

I believe what AnnieBeats is saying is that when guidance counselors send off your materials they have to check off a box or something saying that you took a hard, rigorous course load. If your guidance counselor feels you did not then they would not check the box.

IMO Calculus is a class you need to take end of discussion, so do whatever you have to do as long as you still take calculus.

Yea I have a choice to take it outside so I can take the two AP classes but it conflicts my schedule with Physics…sooo.

Either take Physics or Calc outside of school whichever one you don’t take outside of school take in school. Then pick an AP course to take.

Physics not offered in school so I gotta take Calc at school, but if I do that I can’t take AP Lit, and I would have to give up Honors English for AP Stat…
So it’s gonna be English Honors, Chemistry Honors and Calculus (and a few other classes)
This seems lackluster but my school just started offering Honors…
