No AP classes

My school doesn't offer any AP classes, but I still intend on teaching myself the material for a few courses and taking the AP exam. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on AP subjects that are easy to do self preparation for?

Study something you find interesting - you’ll do well.

There are definitely APs that are relatively easy to independent study, and those that you should avoid. A lot of it depends on your personal strengths and preparation.

In general, social studies APs are some of the more manageable to independent study. Specifically psychology, the content is well supported, and relatively straight forward. You can learn everything you need to learn from a book.

Math APs are another viable option, but with a bit more of an asterisk. Math APs, like social studies APs, are relatively straightforward. However, these can be dangerous for those who struggle in math, or do not have a strong math background. Computer science is a possibility even if you don’t have a strong math background. Computer Science is more of a foreign language class than a math class, to be honest. For me, the hardest part of computer science was keeping on task when at the computer :P

In general, I would avoid science APs for independent study. The often complex concepts, and necessarily lab work makes personal study a difficult task. Biology is somewhat of an exception to this. Biology is very term-based, and is more manageable to do one one’s own.

English APs are very black and white. They are heavily skill-based, and require little factual knowledge. If you have a strong reading background, these may be your best choice. If reading is a struggle for you, it will be difficult to score well.

AjordanMD makes some really good points. If I were you, I would self-study statistics. It’s not a difficult AP exam & you can study the information right out of a textbook.

Environmental Science & the Economics ones are good self studies I have heard.

I would go for Government, Psychology, Economics and Human Geography because they are interesting. Avoid Biology, Computer Science and Physics, they are very difficult to self study.

Statistics is a great one to self-study. Calculus AB is another good one if you have a sufficient math background. I would say avoid the “easier” AP’s (a.k.a. Environmental Science, Psychology, etc.) unless you truly enjoy the subjects and know that you’ll get college credit.

Psychology is one of the easiest to self-study for; just grab a Barrons review book and you are on your way to a 4/5 [granted that you study/use it xD]. Also possibly look into Dual Enrollment ?
