no business program?

I'm curious as to why vandy has no business program? what do kids study there if they are interested in business? is their economics program sufficient?

thanks!!

vandy has phenomonal economics. if one is interested in business, the economics program will be more than satisfactory for you. vandy does offer a management minor. also, if you want to go to grad school eventually, check out the ENGAGE scholarship program - which grants you admission to the graduate business school the same time you are admitted to the undergrad school. additionally, if you want to, it can be arranged to have you take business classes in the graduate school while in undergrad.

technically, you can graduate vandy with a business degree. vandy has a create your own major program, in which you sit down with an advisor and arrange what classes you need to fulfill your own major's requirements. so, you could design your own business major, which could pull from undergraduate classes and graduate classes.

good luck! if you have any questions, PM me.

is the ENGAGE program hard to get into?
what's required? anything additional?

Theres alot of Vandy kids interested in investment banking. Most of them usually major in econ and minor in managerial studies (finance, accounting, etc). All the major banks (Goldman, UBS, Morgan Stanley, etc.) will be doing on- campus interviews later this month.

for info on the ENGAGE program, check out:

Good luck!!

I am very interested in Investment Banking, and am fairly interested in Vanderbilt. However, I feel like my chances are not that great of getting in, and that it may just be a waste of $50 in applying as an econ major.

I have a decent ACT score at 31 (subscores - English 27, Math 32, Reading 33, Science 33, with a 10 on the optional writing), but my class rank hurts me. I have a 4.22 GPA on a 5 scale, with a class rank in the 32nd percentile of a very competitive class. I have taken all honors classes and 5 AP's. Extracurriculars include scholastic bowl, math team, social studies club, golf team, a lot of hockey (varsity captain), boys and girls club of america, and 4 jobs over the last 4 years (I still hold two and the other two ended bc they were seasonal).

I have what I consider to be a good option for a recommendation from a neurologist whose daughter goes to vandy, and will have good teacher recomendations, but am in no way connected with the university (which I fear may hurt me.)

Please weigh in with any insights that may help me decide if I should apply. I feel that my ACT is there, but A LOT of people care about class rank, and that's no good for me. I appreciate any helpful comments. Thank you.

You have good stats. If you like Vandy, apply.

Wow man, you seem like my clone. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=239339

Why is everyone so interested in Investment Banking? Do you know what it entails or simply that it can pay a lot?

Mostly that it pays a lot ;)

I don't really understand why anyone who wants to go in to business would choose Vanderbilt. The HOD program just seems really "soft"

It is not necessary to major in business at the undergraduate level in order to go get into/do well in grad school (for MBA). In fact, I've heard that grad schools would actually prefer you major in something else because they'll teach you all the business stuff once you're in. There are lots of options for undergraduate majors for those interested in business--what does your reference to HOD have to do with that?

thesearch,

I have a son in the HOD program at Vanderbilt right now and I can tell you that the department is not 'soft' anymore. They are shedding the soft image and announced this fall that there will be slight grade deflation to compensate for the image others have of it. One of my son's professors said that he grades like it is graduate school and there was just 1 A for the last 8 page paper assigned. There are weekly papers of 4-6 pages, midterms, presentations, as well as a ton of reading. The major might appear soft, but it is actually more work than my son's upper level economics classes.

Back to the original question of why no business major per se, we asked Professor Innes, the HOD department head, that very questin last year. He said that Vanderbilt feels that the (HOD) Human and Organizational Development major satisfies some of that need. If that major is coupled with an Economics major with a minor in Management, I think that is a very solid preparation at the undergraduate level.

HOD is still "softer" than A&S and ENG.
