Hi everyone!
This is my first year in college and it really sucks that freshmen aren't allowed to have cars! I live about 4 hours away and its always hard for me to hitch rides home. Does anyone else have this problem? Any advice on what I should do?
Also, I have a few friends who DO have cars and make frequent trips home (not anywhere near my home though--too bad!) and with crazy gas prices and everything, its burning a hole in their bank accounts! They always have these empty spaces in their car and think if only they could get a few people to share the ride with them and the costs for gas, then driving home wouldn't be so bad! Anyone else in this situation?

At my school there's a way to send out mass emails to the student body and a bunch of people have done that asking if anyone if was going to there area whatever weekend and that they would chip in for gas if they could get a ride. Or at some colleges I think there's something like a "Ride Board" where people can post looking for rides or offering rides...you could see if your school has something like that?

What about buses or trains? Most schools have some other transportation system nearby to get students home.

yea... buses, trains, and a ride board...

most "ride boards" are now probably online somewhere. ask around.

I would advise against using mass e-mails. It's really annoying and inappropriate for personal use. In most cases, you will be kicked off the network.

Most colleges have a "Ride Board" located in the Student Center. You could also try leaving a message on FACEBOOK such as ---looking for a ride to xxx during school breaks and willing to split gas expense. You could put up a poster in your dorm and in a couple of the upperclassmen dorms that you're looking for a ride to your home location. Also, check online at your college's website in the student activities section because in some colleges, the student activities organization sponser vacation buses to a centralized location.

I agree, it is annoying. What you DO need to ask around for one of the two things:

1) Drop off at the nearest major town/city that your friend or family from home can drive to meet you there on your ride's way home.

2) Find someone who's going to drive BY your exit (which I usually do a LOT) and have someone from your house pick you up at the exit.

Second option seems to be very popular given that the drivers usually appreciate a "forced" rest stop and some extra gas money for their long(er) trip home.

See if you can find a bus or train and find out their nearest destination to your house- even if it's only an hour.
