My situation is a little iffy. When I visited Brown I really liked it, so I had it in my head that I would apply ED 1 there which is due Nov. 1. I don't think I would have a good chance getting in there Regular. However, this is where it becomes tricky. I am absolutley in LOVE with Carleton, but it's 18 hours away. I have never visited and am only basing this on what I have read. I applied for "A Taste of Carleton" which runs from Nov. 2-4 and got in, and now I'm baffled over what I should do. If I do apply to Brown ED, but I love Carleton after my visit which is the day after Brown's deadline...how convenient =( , am I allowed to withdraw my application to Brown if it's only Nov. 4th or 5th.? and then apply EDI or even EDII to Carleton which is Nov. 15 and Jan. 15? Is it too risky to apply to a school that's 20 hours away if it's the one i think I love, but I have not visited? I don't know what to do. I have a feeling that Carleton's the place for me, but I loved Brown and I don't want to just apply reg. there. In short, I would love to go to Brown, but if there's even the slightest chance that Carleton would fit me better, should I forget about going EDI to Brown?

Sorry this was so long. I would appreciate anyone's advice/imput, but I need to know soon because I have to hand in my teacher recs. Ehhh!

I would go visit before then. Invest a bit and take a plane so it isn't 18 hours. Call admissions and see if you can bunk with a student overnight. Then you may have a better idea of what to do.

Well you should most likely be able to withdraw your application, especially since application review does not begin until December [see link below] so it should definitely be fine. Have fun, good luck :D

I wouldn't advise applying anywhere ED that you aren't absolutely sure is your first choice. You don't want to be kicking yourself later.

Yes, the admission rate for ED is higher. But I'm not sure this necessarily means that, given the same credentials, your personal chance is any better with ED than with RD. Aren't the average credentials for ED applicants supposed to be higher, which would explain a higher admission rate? If it is clear from your app and interview that it is your first choice (assuming it turns out to be), this will help you as much as an ED application. My gut feeling anyway. Feel free, anyone, to show me I'm wrong LOL

It would be difficult for me to advise you on a choice of Brown versus Carleton. My daughter is attending the first, my niece went to the second. Both love their schools.

Have you done all the research possible at this point -- read everything on the schools' web sites, checked out web sites like studentsreview and campusdirt, read the entries in the "what these colleges are like" books at your local book store, watched the videotaped tour for Carleton you could get from collegiatechoice?

Since I haven' been able to visit any schools but my two safeties, I'm only doing non-binding stuff, and I'll visit the schools once I get in (that way its' less expensive, 'cause there's no way I'd get into all 4)

hmmm
Can you talk to your teachers and have them fill them all out except for the ED/RD box and and ask them to check off the box after you come back from a visit?
Otherwise you shouldn't do ED unless you are sure.

You can ask Brown to change your ED application to RD once it's in. That way you run no risk. (And no, I wouldn't apply to a school ED if I hadn't visited.)

Don't apply to Brown (or anywhere else) ED unless you're absolutely sure it's your first choice and you would have no regrets going there if you got in.

Do the other folks who are confident about Brown a favor -- apply to both schools RD to give yourself a little time to visit both and think about what you really want.

Of course, if you have any questions about Brown, feel free to PM me or swing by the Brown forum -- I'm a proud member of the class of '09 and I'd be happy to help you out.

Because you have not visited Carleton yet, there is a chance that you will dislike it after visiting. Even if you like it after Nov 4, you won't regret going to Brown. So, go for Brown ED because that gives you the best shot for being accepted. Do RD everywhere else.
I have two principles:
When in a dilemma, take the safer course of action!
When in a dilemma, trust your gut feelings!

thanks for all of the help. I will have no regrets if I go early to brown and get in because I absolutely loved it when I visited and stayed over, but there is a slight chance that I will regret going early to Carleton but there is also the chance that it could be the best choice of my life. I think one of the reasons I keep shying away from brown is because I'm scared of getting rejected.

alright...i have another question. If I am sending in a pre-application part (part I or whatever) is it ok to put down regular decision and then change it to EDII in say a month if I want to go EDII and I get rejected from my EDI?

I think it's ok to apply as EDII from the start, and withdraw the application if you get accepted ED at the other school. You should look at the EDII college's website to see if they have a policy on this.
