I have just passed out from 10th and have 3 months of holidays. Well, my plan was to get atleast 100 hours of community service in these holidays but unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any opportunities. I contacted various NGOs asking them if I could be of any help, but it turns out that I'm too young. They said that most volunteers are from college and so I should try volunteering a bit later. I could do things like collecting waste from my community and giving them to an organisation that could recycle them, but would that count as community service? Is there anything else I can do? I really want to get into a university like UC Berkely..My grades are great so far,..and I have decent extracurriculars but the only thing holding me back is community service. I have 0 hours. I have exactly one month of vecation left! I really really need to do somthing worthwhile. Please help! I am from Hyderabad. Is there any organisation that you could suggest? If not an organisation, is there anything that I can do that will qualify as community service? And, what did you do during your holidays that would add to your college resume? Please please help! The last thing I want to do is waste my entire vecation!

You want to do community service to get into a university? :O

yes? Isn’t that important? I thought it adds to college credit…

Puhleaaze! Don’t do anything just to get into a college. Only do that if you like it.

dont like it?? dont do it.

@abcpqrxyz: The way I see community service is that it is a meaningful activity that improves the things you lack in your community. One month is hardly enough unless you plan on carrying this activity through till you know someone else (just as dedicated as you) is taking care of it. There are homeless individuals that spend each night wondering what the next day will be like. Will they get enough food for tomorrow? Would the monsoon rains come pouring hard and wash away their small shanty homes? No one seems to care because people think that these individuals are alcoholics and are responsible for what they are today. Yes, among them might be bad people but there are also good and innocent kids & folks in this crowd. Targeting these individuals and helping them see a better world is what I term as community service. And why should someone who has spent so much time with these folks want to only continue for one month? To me, Berkeley (heck any college) will straightaway see that you are no better than the people who never did community service; who just wanted to flee from the harsher realities that surround them.

You may be a good kid but please have some decent thought on what community service is. NGOs have their own rules, and one should not contest this, but they do not forbid you from doing good things in this world. A word of advice (and for everyone’s conscious), if you do service for a little while, do not be exaggerate. One who has genuinely helped in a cause will always be humble in this respect. If you don’t follow this rule in life, you are learning nothing out of these humane events. Every kid should do volunteer work so that every community in the world is more beautiful than today, not because they think it’ll shine their app to wherever they want to go to. :)
