I'm really not sure how to handle this.

My parents are divorced. My mom makes under 40k. I have no contact with my dad and he doesn't pay child support or anything. He certainly won't be contributing to college. Will colleges accommodate this? Will his income mess with my EFC so college isn't affordable? I'm really confused.

Your father’s financial information doesn’t matter at all for the FAFSA.

It may matter to colleges and universities that require the CSS Profile or their own financial aid paperwork. In that case, you will need to ask for an NCP waiver. Some institutions will give them, some won’t. If they will award an NCP waiver, they will tell you what information you will need to supply in order to get one.

I had no idea waivers even existed for this. I looked over my top choice’s form and now feel way better about my financial situation. Thank you so much for the quick response.

OP, how long have your parents been divorced and how long has the estrangement between you and him been? Do you know where your father is? These factors will be considered with any NCP waiver.

They divorced in Feb of 06. Haven’t had contact with him since 07. I know he lives instate and moves a lot, but I don’t know where he currently resides. I know no one can really say for sure, but am I decent waiver candidate or is his income (which, I have reason to believe, is around 40k) going to make most schools financially impossible?
