No Credit for AP Comparative Gov't at Northwestern

My son was planning on taking AP Comparative Government during his senior year. He hopes to go ED at Northwestern. I just noticed that Northwestern does not accept AP credit for Comparative Gov't. Does anyone know why? Does Northwestern think this is a bogus class? Should my son take a different AP.

i don’t know why NU doesn’t take AP Comp Gov credit but if that’s all the reason why you’re taking AP’s, just don’t take it (assuming you’re just concentrating on NU- what about other schools?)

i took the class, took the AP… just thought it was interesting

It is a bogus class. They don’t just think it.

<-Took it as an independent study. Easiest test ever.

My S, who is all about politics and government, took it and enjoyed it. That’s all the reason you need to take a class. No, NU won’t take the credit. So what? Don’t plan your hs schedule based on AP credits a school you haven’t gotten into will take or not. Believe it or not, the adcoms at NU aren’t sitting around sneering at kids who take AP Govt.

I don’t necessarily think that AP Comparative Government is as rigorous as an AP Physics or BC Calculus or even a history AP course, so perhaps the school didn’t feel that they wanted to accredit incoming students for that specific class. That’s my best guess. But I wouldn’t feel all too dismayed considering Northwestern is INCREDIBLY generous with credit awarded as compared to other elite schools. I ended up maxing out my AP credits through only the typical AP track amongst top students at my high school. It culminated in a year’s worth of credits before I even took a step on campus.

Do they give credit for US Government && Politics? Might be a deciding factor if I add it to my senior schedule or not.

Yes, I believe they do give credit for US Government & Politics. Each school has its own list of accepted APs, and what scores are accepted. I was surprised that 4s are accepted in certain subjects.

My bad – my son took AP US Govt, not AP Comp Govt. Nonetheless, the point still stands – take what you want, don’t build it around NU’s AP policy (or any school’s).

If you’re in to politics and learning about the political systems of Great Britain, Russia, China, Iran, Nigeria, and Mexico, take it. If not take a class where you can get credit.
