Lately I've been reading a lot of post regarding people's stats. I've noticed that most people write down exactly how many hours they've done their volunteer work. I didn't start my volunteering in order to put it on a college application, so unless it was a requirement (NHS, Key Club, etc.) I haven't kept a record of my hours. I don't know much about the admissions process... will i have to say exactly how many hours I've done each activity? Will I need proof?

also, I've been volunteering at the public library since I was ten years old. I did it a lot more back then than i do now. If i estimate my hours, do I put down the roughly 300 hours since i was ten, or the 45 or so I've done in the last three years?

Most reputable colleges will require you to submit a notarized copy signed by a government official or Nobel Laureate to verify your volunteer work. If you haven’t kept copious records dating back five or ten years, your best bet is probably to hit the gym so that you’ll be in good enough shape to make the most of the factory job that inevitably awaits.

Sorry, I’m obviously kidding. Anyway, don’t stress, you’re not likely to need proof. Most apps just ask you for the activities and how many hours per weeks and weeks per year you participated during grades 9-12. Be proud that you’ve been volunteering for the right reasons and don’t let yourself get anxious reading about some of the overachiever types out there. I’m sure what you’ve done is great. Good luck!

thanks so much. although the heart attack you nearly gave me after that first sentence wasn’t quite as appreciated ;D i don’t even have a clue what a nobel laureate is!

hahaha, the first sentence :D
