brown has always been my dream. since i was little. i was planning to apply ED this year. because i'm 1000% sure i want to go there. when i conveyed this to my guidance counselor in school, she flipped and told me to definitely not apply ed. her logic/reasoning: ed is much more competitive than rd and my chances of getting in ed would be much lower than my chances if i'd apply rd. i'm confused? i thought ED was for people who are SURE (which i am) and committed to brown (which i am) and in love with the school (which i am).

A big part of ED is reserved for recruited athletes. That said, I believe that if you are a qualified candidate, ED will push you over the top.

i see, thank you!

any other opinions on this?

Talk to your guidance counselors some more. If your school sends many to Brown, she knows what it takes. Perhaps she wants you to raise grades and/or scores?

ED is a bit of a head game. You’re competing against more appealing candidates, but you’re also cultivating an image for yourself as one of those overachieving candidates. If you’re sure you want to go there, you might as well.

ED is not for you if you need FA or if you could use another semester to being up your stats. If you are certain Brown is your first choice, I think it makes sense to go ED. D2 applied ED to Cornell because no one has been admitted to Cornell RD in the last 5 years. It was her way of showing love to her first choice. I don’t believe ED is just for athletes and legacies.
