No EC?

Hello folks,

Just a quick question,

I am going to apply next year, however

do you think UCLA would accept students without any ECs at all?

(Meaning I would leave ECs blank other than only my hobbies.)

This is the position I am in as well. Great GPA, likely good personal statements, but no club or group involvement as well as no work experience. I am thinking of offering an explanation for this application weakness in the additional comments section, in addition to listing my hobbies where EC’s are requested.

ECs are not necessary for transfer students, although they can help. GPA, prereq completion, and IGETC/GE are primarily what you should focus on. It is a good idea to join a club you’re interested in, though - often, they demand a very minimal amount of time, and it helps break up the monotony of the day.

 thank you

I seem to remember a few people on last year’s UC Berkeley thread get accepted to EECS (one of the most impacted majors) without any EC, so I guess not.

The general theory is that the more selective the major, the more you bring to the party, the better.

That said, some majors, such as EECS, are so coursework-intensive you barely have time for anything else (especially if working, as well) and the UCs realize this. So I don’t think they will hold it against you. Of course, in the final analysis, you’re competing with fellow applicants, and their make-up can alter the playing field.

You guys are the best.
However, I wlll try to do ECs somehow. Starting next year. I’m going to apply for B.S. Stats at UCLA and B.A. Computer Sci at UCB (Not EECS)

Your priority should be getting good grades. These majors are selective, so the closer to a 4.0, the better.

That said, it would reflect well if you joined some major-related clubs, did tutoring, research, internships, etc. Whatever works for you - but major-related ECs reflect well, so keep that in mind.

Counting all the classes I’ve taken before this Fall, I currently have 4.0 (but it’ll fall apart- eventually).
(I have As’ in all of my classes. All >92%. 92% is the lowest. DARN. )

Last year’s UCLA Stats-major admitted-GPA was 3.74. Yikes.
Seems like it’s around 3.7 to 3.75  If I just manage to get an A, it would be awesome.

However, I am keeping in mind of attending 3rd year, so I can apply for EECS UCB and Comp Sci at UCLA.
[ Row, row, row your boat, gently down the steam. ]
By the 3rd year, all I need are Physics classes.

So, I wouldn’t mind if I fail.

BUT, if I get accepted by any of the big 3, UCLA/USC/UCB. I would just transfer away.

Just curious, what do you do with your free time if you are not involved in ECs?

I am home and I surf the web. (GUILTY)

(Here’s the background)
This behavior might end next semester. I attend school 5 days a weeks and come home late (7~8pm?). Hard to find anything to do within my own schedule from this semester… I use morning time to do HWs and get to class by 1PM which is in LAVC. 1 hr 30min trip to the school. I do my readings for the classes while on the train.
Next semester, I will try to get morning classes thus I have time after-school.
