Just out of curiosity, would not having any ECs be the major deciding factor in a college application?

well it would be somewhat major
the colleges usually look at
gpa first
then sat scores
then your essay
and ecs would prob come up last

but still it is really important because it shows where your passions lie
i prefer to think it as a good boost

For private schools, definitely. For competitive public schools, probably. For less competitive public schools, possibly. I agree with the above poster where GPA>SAT>ECs>Essay (twisting it a bit) If you don't have the EC's, I'm sorry, but if you're applying to a selective school, there are more than just a handful of people that have the exact same "numbers" as you, and the only way the adcoms can slap a face onto your app is if they see your EC's. If you are applying to a less competitive school, numbers is pretty much enough.

thanks for the input, i do have ECs but nothing major like leadership positions.

ECs are better than no ECs

well privates look at it a lot more, but if you are going to be applying to UC's ec's is something that they barely take a look at.

Just make sure you write down those important ec's like video games, socializing, and sleeping. Adcoms love those.

ECs show adcoms who you are and what you're interested in. If you don't have any definitive ECs, make sure you write a very descriptive essay about yourself.

thanks everyone
@bluemountaineer: great idea, i forgot about those :)
