how badly will i be afected if i dont have ELC and im a CA resident?

Well, no UC is dominated by ELC students. ELC means you are in the top 4% of your class. So, that rest of the class can apply and have a good chance as well. Although it can help your chances, it's more important that you have a good GPA and good SATs and you should be fine.

I'm pretty sure UCLA is dominated by ELC students....
Most of my friends here were ELC, especially those from out of state.

I'm not sure where I read this, but I remember reading that like 45% of the students that attend UCLA are ELC.

the thing is, im in the top 2% of my class, but for some reason i didnt get ELC. but they dont know im in the top 2% because it dosent ask me to report it anywhere on the app. So yeah. and i really want to go to UCLA. dang it.

They don't use the class rank from your school. They recalculate it based on their system. For example, some classes that are honors at your school may not be honors to them. There are other things they do as well, but if you are in the top 2%, you can call the ELC help desk to see if you qualified.

I thought ELC was only a California thing.

And they also consider exams: AP, IB, SAT II's, etc.

weird, ive taken all IB classes

Supposedly the UCs only give you inflated grades for 8 classes.

That's true, on your application when the calculate it. But, it's fully weighted for ELC consideration.

Really? Then I don't see how extremefob didn't get ELC. Unless s/he didn't sign the form to release transcripts.

umm i think overall ELC has a higher percentage than most students that get in. but just because ur are not an ELC doesnt mean u wont get in. for example, they use a comprehensive review- they take into consideration ur sats, gpa, honors/ap. rank, type of school, and extra curric.. dont wrry....

i just wrote my class rank on the additional comments section. oh and i did sign the release transcript thing.
should i wait and send my app on monday after i call and ask if i can still get elc?

no actually i think u should submit the app asap.. its not too good to send it like two days before the deadline. since u mentioned it on ur personal statement im sure they will take that into consideration.. or acutally try calling ELC tomorrow and tell them about ur situation. see the thing is after 4-5 weeks when u submit ur UC application u can log onto it and the UC will let u make some changes under background and personal info.. so maybe u can type ur elc pin at that time.. just try calling tho..

cool thanks, more suggestions/opinions?

assuming your SAT scores/APs/GPA/ECs can match your top 2% designation, I don't think there would be much difference in your chances compared to a typical ELC student

Hello extremefob and others. I am a UC grad and so is just about everyone in my circle of friends. Two of my children were/are ELC so I might be able to shed some light on the topic. In the ELC packet that we got from the university, there is a "frequently asked questions" sheet. I will share with you verbatim a question and answer that might be able to help you:

Question: According to my high school, I am in the top 4% of my class. Why wasn't I identfied as eligible in the local context (ELC)?

Answer (from UC): UC determines who qualifies for ELC based on a student's GPA in UC-approved "a-g" courses completed in the 10th and 11th grades, with additional points awarded for UC-approved honors courses. A trained UC admissions evaluator reviews each transcript submitted for the ELC program. School rankings are often based on different criteria - such as all high school courses completed - and are typically different from the UC-determined ranking. It is not uncommon for students from a particular high school to be ranked very closely together and for ELC determination to be decided by .01 or .02 of a grade point. UC strictly adheres to the ELC program limit of the top 4% in each participaing high school's graduating class.

Hope that helps. Good luck to you. Let me know if I can help you any further.
