No ethernet jack?

I acknowledge that I should have been more careful with my purchase. A couple months ago I bought the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13, and I regret nothing. However, realizing now that it has no ethernet jack…where would I find my wifi? I kept hearing different responses when I asked.

Some said Cal Poly had Secure Mustang Wireless, which means I wouldn’t need to worry about ethernet cables. Others said all residence halls required ethernet. And then there are those that say you need it in your dorm, but not anywhere else like in the common rooms/study halls.

I’ll be in North Mountain. Can someone tell me where I will not need ethernet?

If you’re in North Mountain, depending on what building you’re in, you might get lucky and be able to pick up wifi. It will probably be fairly weak, but at least you’ll have it. That’s really only if you’re in the building closest to the academic buildings on campus, otherwise I doubt you’ll be able to get it. They officially brought wifi to all on campus apartments this summer and plan on having it in the dorms by next year. But you’ll likely still need ethernet where you’ll be this year. Common rooms/study rooms and all of campus excluding dorms has wifi. So the only place you won’t find wifi is in your dorm room itself. If you go to the Santa Lucia study lounge, I think you should be able to get it. Secure Mustang wireless is accessible only if you’re on campus (in classroom, the library, sitting a random table outside, etc.) - NOT in your dorm room. However, if you’re in PCV or cerro, since you have wifi there, you can get onto Secure Mustang. I would recommend setting up a router. It’s technically not allowed, but they are not too strict about it. If you don’t know how to do it yourself, find someone who does (that shouldn’t be too hard in North Mountain).

Thank you so much! It came to my attention I could get a USB to ethernet converter. Do you know anything about that? I’m thinking that might be better (and easier) than setting up a router.

Also, do we have to install Cal Poly’s provided antivirus system? I have Windows Defender right now and anything else would conflict with its performance.

Yeah, that’s true a USB ethernet converter is probably a lot easier and maybe cheaper too! I don’t know much about Cal Poly’s antivirus system. I have a Mac and didn’t have to do anything except install Cisco Clean Access Agent when I was a freshmen (but Cal Poly doesn’t use it anymore so I’m not sure what you might have to do instead or if you’ll even need to do anything).

I purchased this ethernet adapter from Monoprice, which is a highly reputable dealer:

Does this not work for Windows 8? specifically for the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. I read somewhere that the Thinkapd Carbons needed to download a package for an ethernet adapter to register…

I have no experience with Windows 8 (or with the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga).

Here’s another one (same one?) on Amazon which is advertised as working on Windows 8 http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Ethernet-Network-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00484IEJS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1378782266&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+ethernet+adapter
