So I’m currently in my first semester of my freshmen year and will be switching my major from biomedical sciences to computer science. I’ve always had an interest in computer science but never fulfilled it until now. How do I get more experience even though I don’t have any at all? How do I get into internships? Companies look for experience and I just want to know how I can get more experience even though I’m starting from basically nothing!
@tiastratton have you programmed much before? If you haven’t, you should first take an introductory programming course (many use Python or Java). Don’t expect CS internship offers without any CS experience.
For what it’s worth, my first CS-related internship was between junior and senior years, after I had already taken programming, software development, and algorithms courses.
@MITer94 a little bit, I’ve been trying to learn python through codeacademy and so far it’s pretty understandable. And yes i know i need more experience before i can get any internships. thank you for the advice!
No problem. Yeah, most internships don’t require or assume you’ve had past internship experience (orherwise, how do you get experience?). Take some CS courses first to get a good foundation first.
I asked the same question and got the same answer as what @MITer94 , and from a few places. If you are really worried, find some spare time and go volunteer. Go to your city or county government website. Most of them have a section for volunteering. It will definitely make you look awesome when interviewing for an internship.
